Earlier this week BYU head coach Kalani Sitake admitted his 5-0 Cougars were in for a tough matchup against the Arizona Wildcats (4-1).
“We have a great Arizona team that we’re going to be going against, and they’re led by Coach [Brent] Brennan, who’s one of my good friends, and so I know they’re going to have their team ready to roll. Nothing’s going to be easy in the Big 12," Sitake said during a media appearance this week.
“Noah Fifita is a great quarterback. He can sling the ball, and he’s very decisive in where he goes with it. He’s got a bunch of receivers that he can throw to and an O-line that will take care of him, so we have to find ways to disrupt that," he added. "With all the attention that the offense usually gets in college football, you can’t forget about their defense, too. Danny Gonzales is doing a great job running that defense. They tackle well. They do fundamental things the right way, and then they’re super physical. Their entire team is physical. It’s going to take the best out of us.”
No. 18 BYU was up for the challenge early, taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 28-yard rushing touchdown from running back LJ Martin and a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bear Bachmeier to wide receiver Parker Kingston.
It didn't take long for the Wildcats to respond, though, adding a touchdown of their own from the aforementioned Fifta to wide receiver Kris Hutson. Just one play into the ensuing drive both teams were forced to leave the field and fans were asked to seek shelter as severe weather rolled in.
"Due to lightning in the area, we are now under a weather delay. We ask that fans please exit the seating area and seek shelter. We will provide updates as they become available," Arizona said in a statement.
