New York Giants fans throughout the region elected not to attend the club's home game versus the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
Instead, rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart and other members of the Giants routinely heard roars from San Francisco supporters throughout Big Blue's 34-24 defeat that dropped the club to 2-7 on the season. Following that loss, Dart spoke openly about what he experienced during the sixth start of his pro career.
"That was interesting," Dart said about 49ers fans taking MetLife Stadium over, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. “I’ve never played at a home game where I felt like it was kind of lopsided in that department. But they have a good fan base, and they traveled well."
One couldn't blame Giants fans for selling tickets to either follow the game from home or do something else with their time. The Giants have now gone 11-32 since the start of the 2023 season. Team co-owner John Mara may show general manager Joe Schoen and/or head coach Brian Daboll the door in January. Mara could also ask Schoen to sell at least one player for future draft assets before the trade deadline arrives at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
Additionally, the Giants will be without offensive fan-favorites Malik Nabers (torn ACL and meniscus) and rookie running back Cam Skattebo (dislocation of his right ankle, a fractured fibula and a ruptured deltoid ligament) until next year.
"It's not fun to lose," Dart acknowledged, per the Giants' website. "I have all the confidence in the world each and every week that we are going to win. I don't ever view another team any differently. Just as a team, we have opportunities to take advantage of moments, and I thought we did today, too. There's just certain plays that we've got to make. I think we just need to play better football all around as a team, both sides of the ball, special teams."
Dart unquestionably has given the Giants a positive spark since becoming their QB1 after Week 3. As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the 22-year-old as the betting favorite at -130 odds to claim the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
That said, Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post noted that the Giants' defense surrendered 105 points over the club's past nine quarters of play. While Dart has looked like the real deal as a first-year pro, he also can't be a miracle-worker for this version of the Giants.
"The biggest thing is I just think that we've got to be able to not just let things collapse a little bit," Dart added. "You know, good plays are going to happen for the other team. That's just the league that we play in, and we can't let one lead to another. I think that's just something we need to get better at. Like, we have to have the intensity, the focus as a whole team to weather the adversity storms, and you know, always just keep the belief that we're going to win."
The Giants will try to pick up a win when they play at the Chicago Bears (5-3) on Nov. 9. On Monday, ESPN BET had New York as a 3.5-point underdog for that matchup.
