In a significant addition to its 2025 roster, Arkansas has landed one of the top defensive backs in the spring transfer portal. Julian Neal, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound cornerback originally from San Francisco, committed to the Razorbacks on April 19 after a winding recruitment that included stops at Fresno State and a brief stint at Stanford.
Neal began his collegiate career at Fresno State, where he redshirted in 2021 and saw limited playing time in 2022. He made a substantial leap in 2024, starting four games and finishing the season with 35 tackles, five tackles for loss, two interceptions, a sack, and six pass breakups. His performance in the New Mexico Bowl, in particular, attracted the attention of coaches and scouts alike.
Following the 2024 season, Neal transferred to Stanford, but re-entered the portal in March after the program parted ways with head coach Troy Taylor. With one year of eligibility remaining, Neal quickly became a priority target for Power Four programs, drawing interest from schools such as Auburn, Florida State, USC, and Syracuse.
Ranked as the No. 4 cornerback and No. 70 overall player in the spring portal by 247Sports, Neal chose Arkansas after visits to Syracuse and Virginia. His decision was influenced by several factors, including Arkansas' facilities, staff, and the opportunity for early playing time.
“The visit went well,” Neal said. “The fans here are really passionate about Arkansas and the Arkansas football team. Walking on that field was the biggest highlight—it’s a crazy experience.”
Neal also emphasized the appeal of Arkansas coaching staff and SEC-caliber resources, citing their support and professionalism as key components in his decision. The chance to reunite with former Fresno State teammate and current Razorbacks wide receiver Raylen Sharpe also played a role.
Arkansas, which struggled in pass defense last season and finished near the bottom of the SEC in several secondary metrics, needs experience and playmaking in the back end. Neal brings both. His physicality, coverage instincts, and ability to play the ball in the air make him a natural fit in the Razorbacks’ defensive scheme.
“It's an opportunity for me to come in right away and show my potential,” Neal said. “I take pride in the schedule they have and want to compete against the best.”
Aware of the step up in competition, Neal expressed confidence in his ability to adjust to SEC speed and size. “I know it’s different here. The receivers are bigger and faster, but I think that challenge will make me better.”
With Neal now officially on board, Arkansas continues to build momentum through the portal. His addition, along with linebacker Trent Whalen just a day earlier, signals the Razorbacks’ intent to compete aggressively in the SEC this fall.
