The Arkansas Razorbacks have officially filled their defensive backs coach vacancy with the hiring of Seattle Seahawks assistant Nick Perry, the program announced on January 16. Perry brings a wealth of experience from both the NFL and college football, making him a valuable addition to head coach Sam Pittman’s staff.
Perry spent the 2024 season in a defensive quality control role with the Seahawks, where he contributed to a pass defense that ranked 11th in the NFL, allowing just 211.9 passing yards per game. Before his time in Seattle, Perry coached with the Atlanta Falcons, serving as an assistant wide receivers coach in 2023 and defensive backs coach from 2021-22.
Prior to his NFL coaching career, Perry worked under legendary coach Nick Saban at Alabama from 2017-20, serving as a graduate assistant and analyst. During his tenure, the Crimson Tide appeared in three College Football Playoff National Championships, winning two.
A native of Alabama, Perry was a standout defensive back for the Crimson Tide from 2010-14. He played in 44 games, recording 121 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack, 10 passes defended, and two interceptions. Perry won two national championships with Alabama in 2011 and 2012 before signing with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2015. He later had a short stint with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016 before transitioning into coaching at Alabama.
Perry replaces former secondary coach Deron Wilson, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Georgia State. He will work under defensive coordinator Travis Williams, who is entering his third season with the Razorbacks.
Arkansas’ secondary struggled in 2024, ranking No. 110 in the FBS by allowing 246.9 passing yards per game—significantly worse than their 2023 ranking of 32nd (202.8 passing yards allowed per game). With Perry’s experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, the Razorbacks are hoping to revamp their pass defense heading into the 2024 season.
Perry’s contract with Arkansas is a two-year deal worth $325,000 per year through February 28, 2027. The agreement includes a no-compete clause preventing Perry from accepting another SEC job unless it is for a head coach or play-calling defensive coordinator position.
With his blend of NFL and college coaching experience, Perry brings a strong defensive pedigree to Arkansas. The Razorbacks will look to improve their secondary play and compete at a higher level in the SEC under his guidance.
