Arkansas' Landon Jackson Slated for NFL Draft Day 2 After Slipping

Expectations surrounding Landon Jackson’s draft stock were always tempered by realism, even as some Arkansas fans clung to hopes of a surprise first-round selection. The former Razorback standout, who transferred from LSU in 2022, had the résumé and physical profile to spark intrigue, but not quite enough polish to crack the top 32 picks on Thursday night.

Instead, Jackson begins Day 2 as one of the most notable names still waiting for an NFL home. Ranked No. 51 on Sports Illustrated’s best available board, he sits firmly within second-round range. Although disappointed not to hear his name during the opening round, Jackson remains well-positioned to be selected early Friday night.

He hosted a draft party in Texarkana, surrounded by friends, family, and Arkansas coaches, including head coach Sam Pittman, who voiced his confidence before the event. “He deserves to get drafted tonight, so hopefully he will,” Pittman said. That moment never came Thursday, but anticipation now shifts to the rounds ahead.

On-Field Impact and SEC Credentials

Jackson’s career arc has been defined by growth and perseverance. After a limited role during his lone season at LSU, he transferred to Arkansas and quickly established himself as a key contributor on the Razorbacks’ defensive front. In 2023, Jackson started all 12 games he played, recording 49 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks.

He saved one of his most impactful outings for the biggest stage, tallying eight tackles and two sacks against Texas A&M at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. That performance showcased his ability to disrupt from the edge, particularly when used in aggressive fronts.

His productivity and presence helped him earn second-team All-SEC honors, further validating his growth in one of college football’s most talent-rich conferences.

Elite Combine Performance Raises Ceiling

Jackson’s physical testing at the NFL Scouting Combine may ultimately prove to be the biggest driver of his draft appeal. Measuring in over 260 pounds, he clocked a 4.68-second 40-yard dash, posted a 40.5-inch vertical jump, and recorded a 10-foot-9 broad jump. Those marks are historically rare for a player of his size, placing him among the most explosive defensive linemen in recent memory.

His Athleticism Score of 86 was the highest of any edge rusher at the event, a significant data point for NFL teams seeking high-upside pass rushers.

Development Needed, Upside Undeniable

While Jackson’s athletic profile and effort level are major assets, his overall game remains a work in progress. He wins with burst and hand violence but lacks consistency in cornering and counter moves. As a run defender, he can be overpowered or lose balance through contact. These are coachable flaws, but they will factor into how teams project his early impact.

Still, Jackson offers rare tools at a premium position, and on Day 2, that’s often enough to make him one of the first names called.
