ASU freshman QB ‘betting on himself’ to win starting job in 2026

Sam Leavitt brought success to Arizona State University, but the transfer portal has him moving on.

Kenny Dillingham is locked in to finding the Sun Devils’ next signal caller to have the program executing at a high level in the Big 12. Jeff Sims, a sixth-year player in college football, is on his third team. He started at Georgia Tech as a quarterback from 2020 to 2022 before transferring to Nebraska. After spending 2023 with the Cornhuskers, Sims transferred again to ASU in 2024. Sims, a second-year senior, has accounted for 10 total touchdowns and five interceptions this season. Dillingham is also open to getting a quarterback from the portal; however, he recruited a highly talented freshman that is extremely confident.

Cameron Dyer, a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year from New Mexico, came to Tempe (Ariz.) as a four-star prospect in Dillingham’s 2025 recruiting class. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was a star at La Cueva High School and possessed a skill set that accounted for nearly 2,500 passing yards, 1,300+ rushing yards, and 50+ touchdowns in his senior season. Dyer led his program to a championship appearance in the New Mexico 6A playoffs. He was electric as a junior, recording 2,897 passing yards, 1,492 rushing yards, and 55 touchdowns — navigating La Cueva to a 10-3 record and a New Mexico 6A state title.

Dyer competed in football, basketball, and track and field, but he is prepared to turn up at Arizona State.

He is betting on himself to win the starting job in the fall.
