Auburn can still go to a bowl game.

After all of the pain and suffering the team went through this season, this could all change around in a snap. Get by Mercer, beat Bama, and boom - the Tigers would be bowl eligible, and at the same time, ruin the Tide’s season.

But first, beating the FCS team isn’t as easy as it may seem.

The 9-1 Bears won the Southern Conference by at least two games with a high-powered offense that can screw up an Auburn team looking ahead to what’s next.

Why Mercer Will Win

The Bears have an interesting mix of positive parts, all designed to make Auburn have to work a little bit too hard.

Start with this - this bunch can punt.

John McConnell and the Mercer punting game should be able to flip the field just enough to matter for an Auburn offense that struggles to keep things moving.

Combine that with the best offense in the FCS, and Mercer will keep pressing with the passing game that will keep coming, and …

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn will be able to throw without too much of an issue.

When we last saw Auburn, Ashton Daniels was throwing at will on the Vanderbilt defense - right up until the overtime misfire - and he’s going to keep it all going.

Most teams throw on Mercer to try keeping up. Auburn will keep throwing because now, after a season of struggling offensively, it’ll do everything it can to get up to speed before Bama comes to town.

Auburn vs Mercer Prediction, Betting Lines

Mercer is dangerous, and it’ll press just enough to make the Tigers keep trying. But the AU defense will take over when needed to keep this from ever getting too tense.

Again, there’s still a chance to go to a bowl game - the Vanderbilt game showed that there’s still something there with this team that might make this a special season after all the drama.

This won’t be just a filler game. Auburn really will use this as a late-season tune-up for what’s next.
