The No. 2 hasn't been worn at Auburn since Cam Newton led the Tigers to a BCS National Championship victory over the Oregon Ducks back in the 2010 season.
While the program hadn't retired the number, they were clearly making it a point not to distribute it in order to honor Newton. On Monday, Auburn made it official, announcing that Newton's No. 2 jersey will be hung in the rafters alongside Pat Sullivan, Terry Beasley and Bo Jackson.
This move was widely celebrated across college football, but it does bring a bit of bad news for five-star freshman quarterback Deuce Knight. The No. 25 overall recruit in 2025 wore No. 2 in high school, and was even photographed wearing the No. 2 Auburn jersey during his visits to the program.
However, when it came to getting Newton's blessing to wear the number on the Plains, Knight got anything but back in December.
"I like Deuce," Newton said. "However, in this day and age, everything is earned. You got to earn the right. What you did in high school, nobody gives a (Expletive)in college. I really hope that he's good. I really hope that he can stay at Auburn. I really hope he can do what he's saying. But as an avid, diehard Auburn fan, it's easier said than done. Win the locker room first. (Expletive) numbers. (Expletive) entitlement. (Expletive)NIL. Win a game."
Following the announcement, it appears that Knight's chances to wear No. 2 at Auburn have gone from slim to zero.
Following the disapproval from Newton, Knight has since chosen to wear No. 9. Although the Tigers will be leaning on Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold this season, it doesn't mean that Knight won't have an opportunity to play.
As for his number situation, Knight will have the opportunity to leave his own legacy, which was another reason Newton declined.
The Tigers will officially retire Newton's jersey on Oct. 11 when they host No. 5 Georgia.
