Avery Johnson Raves About Kansas State’s New Transfer Wideout

Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson is already dreaming big about his new weapon, former Purdue wide receiver Jaron Tibbs.

Johnson told The Kansas City Star’s Kellis Robinett, “He is going to be a dude for us this year.”

“He’s just a big, physical receiver who is well put together,” Johnson continued. “He’s smart, a good route‑runner, has strong hands, and is good at catching in traffic. He does things you can’t teach.”

That sentiment isn’t just locker‑room hype; it’s rooted in what Tibbs has shown on tape and at the podium. At 6‑3 and around 215 pounds, he’s the kind of target Johnson can lean on in the red zone and when everything tightens up.

BringOnTheCats broke down what Tibbs brings to the table, saying, “a possession receiver with the ability to win contested deep balls. He’s a load to get on the ground when he gets the ball in his hands.” That aligns perfectly with Johnson’s praise. Tibbs is known for having strong hands, savvy route tree, and grit in tight coverage.

Kansas State offensive coordinator Matt Wells has also noticed. Spring practice reports highlighted Tibbs as a polished playmaker with confidence, perimeter blocking chops, and minimal drops. That’s a big deal given how often tight-coverage situations can stall drives. Johnson’s mid‑week rhythm could come from connecting early and often with a reliable option like Tibbs.

The signing fills a gap in K-State’s receiver room after losing Tre Spivey and Keagan Johnson from the portal exodus. Tibbs brings the kind of polished skill and physical presence that complements Jayce Brown’s speed. He gives Johnson a chain-moving safety net and a focal point in the red zone.

If spring buzz turns into fall production, K-State just unlocked a mid-field weapon that Matt Wells’ QB room can rely on. Let’s see if “he does things you can’t teach” turns into highlight-reel plays this fall.
