Looking to be decked out in a Coal Rush jersey to watch WVU host Iowa State next week? Well, I’m afraid we have sone bad news.

While fans are able to purchase Coal Rush jerseys, they will NOT arrive in time for the game against the Cyclones on October 12. The official WVU Sports account added this clarifier on their post with a link to buy the jerseys.

WVU’s Deputy Athletics Director of External Affairs Matt Wells also explained the situation to a disappointed fan.

“Stay tuned. Replica jerseys won’t be ready for the game next week but will have an update on availability to order soon. Important to note we plan to wear the Coal Rush uniform for several years so will be multiple opportunities to wear over next few years,” responded Wells.

This is far from an ideal situation for the program after so much hype went into the Coal Rush uniform concept. However, there’s still reason to buy one for WVU fans since it’s clear the Mountaineers will keeping them in the rotation beyond the 2024 season.

The Saturday night atmosphere will also serve as the backdrop to Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht’s father Anthony being honored. Former Mountaineer Anthony Becht was unable to attend his induction into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame and will be honored when his son is in town.

As far as the Coal Rush uniforms, they were initially revealed in May to a polarizing reaction. Some fans prefer their Mountaineers to simply stick to the school’s colors of gold and blue. Despite the distain of some, this is not the first time WVU fans will watch a West Virginia team wear black.

The WVU men’s basketball team wore black jerseys during the 2023 Brawl, famously bringing back the black jerseys for the first time in over a decade. The original black jerseys debuted in 2010, a special season for the Mountaineer basketball. The women’s team also wore black jerseys this past season.

WVU director of athletics Wren Baker has openly discussed the idea of a black uniform for the football team in the past, citing his desire to listen to the players and dealing with backlash at this prior stop in North Texas when he incorporated a non green look for the “Mean Green.”

But no matter how anyone may feel about the black uniforms, it’s safe to say WVU fans all just want the team to win as much as possible.
