With the starting quarterback likely out for the Wisconsin Badgers, Eugene Hilton Jr. should be someone to watch against MTSU.
Middle Tennessee put together one of the worst FBS performances so far this season in a 34-14 loss to Austin Peay, an FCS program. The Blue Raiders played poor, conservative football overall which saw the opening line between the two sides shoot to 28 points in the favor of the Badgers. The line shot up drastically even with starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. still recovering from a non-contact injury suffered against Miami (OH) last game.
Now, the Wisconsin Badgers are moving forward this week expecting Edwards Jr. to sit on the sidelines during the game against the Blue Raiders. Backup quarterback Danny O’Neil will likely start and receive the majority of the playing time, but someone else on the roster may also see a boost in his time on the field.
With O’Neil likely starting this week, his favorite target throughout camp may also receive playing time due to the connection that has been developed between the two. Eugene Hilton Jr., a former three-star recruit and current true freshman wide receiver for the Badgers, has been the premier target for O’Neil during practice. Hilton Jr. also made an appearance against the RedHawks and recorded his first collegiate reception, which was thrown by O’Neil.
Hilton Jr. managed to find his way onto the field last game and provided a pleasant spark for the team despite not being expected to do much in his first few games. The second game against Middle Tennessee, however, could prove to be more productive given the current situation and the outlook coach Luke Fickell has on the freshmen on the team.
When asked about the freshmen continuing to play this season, Fickell stated, “We are going to need them, and they are going to play.” The Badgers are going to continue to lean heavily on the freshmen as the season progresses and each player becomes more comfortable at the collegiate level.
For Hilton Jr., giving O’Neil an entire game and multiple different routes and play options with his favorite target could result in a pleasant offensive boost for the true freshman. Hilton Jr. is a shifty, strong, and mature receiver for his age and despite going up against collegiate competition, the receiver looks poised and confident. Middle Tennessee not only struggled against Austin Peay, but allowed chunk plays through the air to consistently be converted.
Hilton Jr. is mature and plays the game as if he is a veteran, which is an added layer of skill that could truly throw the Blue Raiders secondary off. Austin Peay has plenty of talented players, but none of the receivers on the roster had quite the same maturity and experience at the position that Hilton Jr. possesses.
