Baylor football is mourning the loss of redshirt freshman defensive lineman Alex Foster, who died after an apparent shooting in his hometown of Greenville, Mississippi, on Tuesday night. He was 18 years old.
A promising talent in the Bears’ 2024 recruiting class, Foster was expected to contribute significantly to the team’s defensive line rotation in the upcoming season.
Baylor Athletics confirmed the tragic news on Wednesday. In a joint statement, Athletic Director Mack Rhoades and Head Football Coach Dave Aranda said, “We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster, a beloved member of our football family. Our deepest condolences are with Alex’s family and all who loved him, as we lift them up in prayer now and in the days to come.”
Foster, who redshirted during the 2024 season, had shown great potential during spring practices and was anticipated to play a key role in the Bears’ defensive lineup.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 292 pounds, he was a standout at St. Joseph Catholic School in Madison, Mississippi, before committing to Baylor. Despite late recruitment efforts from other programs, including Texas, Foster remained committed to the Bears and was due for a major opportunity in 2025.
The circumstances surrounding Foster’s death are still under investigation, with the report of the shooting coming from local Mississippi news reporter Blake Levine.
The Baylor community, along with fans and teammates, are grieving the loss of a young man remembered not only for his athletic abilities but also for his character and the positive impact he had on those around him.
As the investigation continues, the Baylor family remains united in support of Foster’s loved ones, honoring his memory and the legacy he leaves behind.
