The biggest talk of the town in the NFL offseason this week has centered around what jersey number incoming rookies will choose to wear with their new teams.
The reason why this is such a debate lately is because these new players are asking permission to un-retire numbers the team made unavailable out of respect for former legends who wore that number throughout their career.
The debates of whether or not this should be allowed started back up this year after Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon presented first overall pick Cam Ward with a No. 1 jersey, a number previously retired by the Titans organization.
If a jersey is retired, it’s retired. That’s it. Completely ridiculous what teams are letting happen with those numbers for the sake of social posts/videos. Legends shouldn’t be put in the position to un-retire it, and tbh no incoming rookie should feel like they can ask for it https://t.co/sSgWusuOkM

Since that moment, fans have began wondering if their incoming rookies will follow suit and look to un-retire jersey numbers upon entering the NFL. The Chicago Bears could be involved with a similar debate with second-round pick Luther Burden III.
During his high school days and in his time at Missouri, Burden was rocking the No. 3 jersey number, a clean number for such a versatile wide receiver. Unfortunately, Burden might have to finally look for a new number in the NFL.
The Bears currently have 14 jersey numbers retired for former legends and all-time greats, included in that list is the No. 3, reserved for Hall of Famer Bronko Nagurski. Nagurski played nine years for the Bears as a fullback and defensive tackle. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and passed away in 1990.
Out of respect to the Nagurski family, a new number will likely be on the way for Burden and there's an obvious choice he should take. Wide receivers typically choose a number in the single digits, teens, or 80s. With some exceptions such as Green Bay Packers rookie Matthew Golden choosing to wear No. 22.
For Burden, there aren't any jersey numbers available or un-retired in the single digits. In the teens, there's not any options currently available either. As for the 80s, the only option on the table is No. 80. But there's a much cleaner option out there than that.
If I were to suggest a number for Burden, I'd say he should pick the No. 0 to wear with the Bears. It's a sleek number and he would be the first player in Bears history to wear it. Bears' running back D'Andre Swift rocked the No. 0 with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 after the league officially allowed players to choose the number and it looked sweet.
As of this post, tight end Colston Loveland is the only Bears rookie to choose a jersey number after deciding to go with No. 84. We'll see what official decision Burden actually makes soon so Bears fans can start getting the orders in.
