In an interesting Big 12 sports story, one active head football coach has officially purchased a minority stake in a minor league baseball team.

On Tuesday afternoon, KansasLance Leipold and his wife Kelly entered the world of ownership with their share of the Beloit Sky Carp.

While Jayhawk and Big 12 fans alike may immediately think of Beloit, Kansas, less than three hours away from Lawrence, the Sky Carp are actually based in Leipold’s home state of Wisconsin.

The Beloit Sky Carp is a Minor League Baseball team of the Midwest League and the High-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. They are located in Beloit, Wisconsin, and play their home games at ABC Supply Stadium.

Some of their famous players include Prince Fielder, Tony Gwynn Jr., and Jim Morris, a pitcher who made his MLB debut at 35 years old, which eventually led to the creation of the movie The Rookie.

Leipold has spent loads of time back home during his coaching career, which included several stints across the state, including the University of Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

While he may not have much time to watch the Skycarp play in season, Leipold should get to see plenty of exciting sporting moments as he sets his sights on getting the Jayhawks ready to take a jump in 2025.
