Big 12 Represents 2 of 5 Programs With 5-Star QB Commits
JOE LUMAYA/SPECIAL TO THE STAR / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Big 12 Conference has always been one of the highest-scoring leagues in college football, producing some of the nation’s top talents.

Heading into the 2025 season, the league represents 40% of the programs that have secured commitments from a five-star quarterback, via Rivals.

Kalani Sitake and the BYU Cougars landed the highest-rated commit in program history with Ryder Lyons, the first player in program history to earn a five-star rating in the modern recruiting era.

Lyons threw for over 3,000 yards and 46 touchdowns as a sophomore while adding nearly 600 yards and 14 scores on the ground. He is a dynamic dual-threat talent who can immediately raise the program’s ceiling.

Meanwhile, Keisean Henderson, a Texas native and the 2025 Navy All-American Bowl MVP, opted to stay close to home, committing to the Houston Cougars. His arrival gives the program a chance to turn things around, coming off back-to-back 4-8 seasons.

Strong quarterback play is the foundation of any contender, and both BYU and Houston now have their future leaders in place. With names like Patrick Mahomes and Robert Griffin III in the Big 12’s QB lineage, Lyons and Henderson join a conference that knows how to develop stars under center.

Houston will take on Stephen F. Austin in its season opener at home on Aug. 28, while BYU kicks off the 2025 season on its home field against Portland State on Aug. 30.

Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee are the other three programs that join the list.
