Bill Belichick will have a familiar face on his staff at North Carolina.
His son, Steve Belichick, is set to join his dad’s staff as North Carolina’s defensive coordinator, per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. Steve Belichick will join North Carolina after Washington’s bowl game on Dec. 31 against Louisville.
Bill Belichick addressed the idea of adding his son to the staff during his opening press conference.
“On the staff, we’ll hire the best coaches we can hire,” Belichick said on Dec. 12. “I want to do everything I can to help this program and make it as strong as possible, so we’ll hire the best ones we can get. There are several college coaches that are involved in bowl games and so forth, so I wouldn’t interfere with the process at those schools, with their commitments to their teams. We’ll see how it goes."
Rumors during Belichick's hiring process suggested that part of his agreement would have his son installed as a "coach-in-waiting." That has not been substantiated since his hiring. Belichick signed a five-year contract with North Carolina.
Steve Belichick previously held roles on his dad's Patriots teams before catching on as the defensive coordinator at Washington. He started with the Patriots in 2012 as a defensive assistant and coached multiple position groups in New England.
