Boise State Broncos Key to the Season

The coverage teams need to be stronger.
Usually, when a team is struggling in kick and punt coverage, it’s a statistical anomaly with one or two breakdowns screwing things up. With Boise State, it was an issue considering how many times it kicked the ball off.

The kick-six by Oregon was a killer in the 37-34 Bronco loss, and overall for the season, the team allowed 22.2 yards per return.

Oregon came up with a punt return for a score, too, but overall, the punt return coverage ranking was a sample size of one. It just so happened to be a massive one.

Boise State Broncos Key Player

Sire Gaines, RB RFr.
He won’t have to do it alone. As long as Malik Sherrod from Fresno State is healthy, he's more than capable of handling the rushing workload, but Gaines has the talent to be fantastic as the workhorse.

He won’t be Ashton Jeanty - no one can be - but he’s a tough runner who’ll almost certainly be in the mix for All-Mountain West honors. If he is, nothing stops.

Boise State Broncos Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss

Top Transfer In: Sterling Lane II, EDGE Jr.
Notre Dame’s Jaden Mickey should be a factor at corner, but the great Bronco pass rush has enough parts that other guys fly free and make big things happen.

That should be Lane, a 6-3, 232-pound from Arizona who was a big recruit, but he only made 23 tackles with an interception for a score in his three years. The opportunity is there to bust out.

Top Transfer Out: Prince Stachan, WR Jr.
Not having linebacker Andrew Simpson also hurts - he’s off to North Carolina - but losing the explosion of Stachan could be bigger. He only caught 37 passes in his two seasons, but he averaged 15.6 yards per catch, and now he should shine bright for USC.

Boise State Broncos Key Game

at Notre Dame, Oct. 4
The opener at USF is a giant deal when it comes to national attention and getting off to a hot start - Tampa on August 30th won’t exactly be light and breezy. But whatever happens there, the real street cred comes with that fun date in South Bend.

Boise State doesn’t have to necessarily win, but if it makes it a great fight and then rolls through the Mountain West, all will be fine. Win, and a trip to the CFP will be there for the taking.

Boise State Broncos 2025 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen

Winning the Mountain West shouldn’t be much of an issue, but there can only be one loss.

As long as there aren’t any brain-cramps, the Broncos will be right back in the hunt for a College Football Playoff spot.

UNLV isn’t the UNLV of last year, and that’s a home game. There’s no one else in the Mountain West who should be able to hang with this bunch, unless Air Force finds its mojo again at home, or if Fresno State or Colorado State rise up and rock - and those last two games are in Albertsons.

But there are two massive issues - at South Florida, and at Notre Dame. The Broncos can lose one of those, but realistically, not two, if the goal is to get back to the College Football Playoff.

Set The Boise State Win Total At … 9.5

Likely Wins: App State, Colorado State, Eastern Michigan, at Nevada, New Mexico, at San Diego State, at Utah State

50/50 Games: at Air Force, Fresno State, UNLV, at USF

Likely Losses: at Notre Dame
