Boise State Football Preview 2025: The Broncos Just Keep Winning

It feels so obvious after the fact.

Of course it had to be Boise State taking the first automatic non-power conference bid in the College Football Playoff.

Cincinnati might have broken through the CFP glass ceiling, but it’s a Big 12 school now. Boise State did it all last year on a Mountain West budget.

The Broncos got there, but the quick exit will likely be the norm in the expanded College Football Playoffs going forward.

The teams outside of the Power Four that don’t have the same depth, lines, and resources might be able to sneak out a win in the tournament when everything breaks right, but two or three will take something amazing. But ...

Who cares? Boise State just wants to get its shot against the stuffy elites. If it’s a 31-14 loss to Penn State, so be it.

And while it felt like it had to be Boise State as the representative of the new era of an expanded playoff - just like it was the first Group of Five program to get the New Year’s Six invite in the CFP system, beating Arizona in the 2014 Fiesta Bowl - it was hardly a lock.

The success continues to be jaw-dropping. It doesn’t matter who you are and what conference you’re in. If you crank up 27 straight winning seasons, and win ten or more games in 19 of those campaigns, you know how to do something right.

Boise State has an infrastructure of success that makes it all seem like a given.

The program couldn’t possibly replace Dan Hawkins, and then Chris Petersen became a legend. There was no way to replace Petersen, and then Bryan Harsin went 69-19 in seven seasons.

Andy Avalos won ten games in 2022, but the 5-5 start the next year wasn’t a good enough start, and now Spencer Danielson is 15-4 with two Mountain West titles and a trip to the CFP.

And it seems like he's just getting started.

Is it obvious that the Broncos will rip through the Mountain West again this year before taking down the new-and-improved (hopefully you can hear the eye-roll) Pac-12 in 2026?

Yeah, of course. It’s Boise State. Enjoy more winning.
