Brent Venables to Brace Himself for Worse After John Mateer’s Injury Deals Major Career Blow

Oklahoma’s cruising pace in the season so far came to an abrupt end with John Mateer’s tough update. The QB is out indefinitely with a hand injury, and will undergo surgery to repair it. Brent Venables is losing his biggest trump card in Mateer. But that’s not all. It looks like John Mateer will be taking a lot away from Norman, as he goes down with this brutal blow.

John Mateer has been phenomenal in his run with the Sooners so far. He is a big reason why the heat under Brent Venables’ seat was lessened in the course of these 4 weeks. But Mateer’s departure highlighted a big problem in the camp, that the Sooners now have to take care of without him. Jordan Rodgers said in a September 24 episode of Get Up, “While I think he was the best pure passer in college football, he was also Oklahoma’s leading rusher. The run game has been absent without him, and I think that’s the biggest stressor for Oklahoma moving forward.” Mateer leads the team in rushing yards, at 190.

And that’s not all. John Mateer was also the top favorite to win the Heisman this season. The injury and the uncertainty of his future caused him to drop to +2200. Now that he is out, those odds are still subject to change. Hopefully, Brent Venables is able to capitalize on the momentum that came with Mateer during his absence.
