Despite this being just the second season for Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, the Wolverines are entering a new era — and it has everything to do with Bryce Underwood, who arrives with more hype at the quarterback position than the program has seen ever.
The No. 1 quarterback in the class of 2025 is the favorite to start under center when Michigan opens its season at home against New Mexico on Aug. 30. Not only will there be a new quarterback, but also a new offensive coordinator, with Chip Lindsey now leading the offense.
Michigan lists Underwood at 6-foot-4, 208 pounds, but the freshman phenom says he’s added weight since arriving in Ann Arbor — more than 15 pounds, in fact — and he’s already feeling the benefits.
“I came in at 215. I weigh 230 right now,” Underwood said, via The Wolverine on On3. “I feel like it’s made me more explosive. They help with our speed and everything like that, so I feel faster than I usually do.”

The Wolverines went 8-5 last season and experienced their fair share of growing pains after losing a significant portion of their 2023 national championship roster. Still, they finished strong with statement wins over the Ohio State Buckeyes and Alabama Crimson Tide. Continuing that momentum into 2025 will be crucial as they aim to turn things back around.
It sounds like Michigan has a special athlete at quarterback — one who has already reshaped his body to prepare for the college game. That transformation could help accelerate his transition and the Wolverines’ resurgence.
