Following the Wednesday firing of Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore, all eyes in college football are on the team's star quarterback, Bryce Underwood.
The five-star freshman quarterback was the second-highest-ranked recruit in program history and was the No. 1 player in the 2025 cycle. In his first season in the maize and blue, Underwood led the team to a 9-3 record, throwing for 2,229 yards with nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 365 yards and an additional five touchdowns.
While his numbers don't necessarily pop off the page, Underwood is expected to be a generational talent over the next couple of years, as Michigan signed him to a deal north of $10 million to bring him to Ann Arbor. However, with Moore no longer in the picture, Underwood's future with the program is in question as revealed by On3's Pete Nakos.
As Nakos confirmed, Underwood's contract language does not include a buyout clause, possibly allowing him to depart the program without issue. However, the Michigan native will want to see who replaces Moore as the head coach before deciding.
"Sources have told On3 that those in Underwood’s camp are paying close attention to who the next hire will be following the recent upheaval at Michigan," wrote Nakos. "The contract Underwood signed to go to Michigan does not include a buyout, sources tell On3. The lack of a buyout makes it possible for Underwood to enter the transfer portal."
If Underwood were to leave, he would command one of the largest transfer portal markets in history.
Until then, the expectation is that he will lead the No. 18 Wolverines against the No. 13 Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl later this month.
