The Michigan Wolverines entered their bye week this past week with a 3-1 record on the season heading into Saturday's game at home against Wisconsin.
Michigan's solid start to the season included three as-advertised performances from former five-star freshman QB Bryce Underwood, and one rough performance on the road against Oklahoma, the team's only loss so far this season.
This week, former North Carolina Tar Heels and current Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey shared his thoughts on Underwood's performance against the Cornhuskers, sharing inside intel on the young QB's role, options and responsibilities in the Wolverines' attack.
Lindsey joined Inside Michigan Football to share his impressions of Underwood's 37-yard touchdown scamper on a quarterback draw against the Huskers that had Michigan fans jumping off of the edge of their seats from Lincoln, Nebraska to Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Lindsey shared insight on Underwood's flexibility at the line of scrimmage to adjust plays, revealing that the former Belleville (MI) Tigers star made a smart decision leading to a wide open field of green turf and an easy score.
"I don't know if you ever rank your play calls but I thought the quarterback draw at Nebraska was a strong case for number one," IMF host Doug Karsh said to Lindsey.
"You know that was good, we executed that, and that's something that, you know, we've worked hard on and you can give Bryce a lot of credit, I mean, he understood the look and made the right call and got into, there's a lot of options (for Underwood) on that play so, great, great job by him," Lindsey said.
Lindsey said that Underwood usually doesn't make the same mistake twice, a testament to his ability to make smart plays under pressure as the team's QB.
Lindsey said the Wolverines' offense has improved significantly from the team's road opening loss to Oklahoma and that the play of Michigan's offensive linemen up front have been a big reason why.
The Wolverines' two backup guards, Nathan Efobi and Jake Guarnera, have impressed head coach Sherrone Moore with starters Gio El-Hadi and Brady Norton having used this past week to improve their health statuses in hopes of playing against the Badgers.
Michigan's offense needs its offensive line to function at a high level to compete for a Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoffs spot this season.
Underwood had the escapability to make plays when they break down. Michigan's offense needs consistency above all else going forward with Underwood the relative neophyte among Big Ten quarterbacks and several talented offenses set to face off with the Wolverines in the coming weeks.
