Former Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams has accepted a new position as the head coach of the Maryland Terrapins. Williams, coming off his best season as the Aggies head coach, will take over for Mark Turgeon after a disappointing end to the season in the second round of the NCAA tournament against Michigan.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise for Aggie fans, as minor rumors have circled around Williams' future at College Station all throughout the offseason. Williams spent a total of 6 seasons as the Texas A&M head coach, redefining and establishing a strong basketball culture throughout College Station.

With a career record of 373-228, Williams will bring a strong defensive style of coaching to Maryland that the Terps have been looking for. It has been reported that Maryland was specifically waiting until today to hire Williams, as his buyout significantly decreased on April 1st. Although Williams has yet to comment on the situation, Texas A&M Director of Athletics Trev Alberts made a statement following his departure:

“We would like to thank Buzz Williams for his years of service heading up our men’s basketball program. We wish he and Corey and their family all the best moving forward.”

Alberts then went on to comment on the future of Texas A&M men’s basketball.

“We are excited about the future of Aggie basketball, and we will find the right leader for our program.”

The Aggies will now pivot towards finding a new head coach, as a complicated offseason just became much more difficult. With 8 senior and veteran players departing from the team this offseason and the transfer portal heating up, the Aggies will now need to take a costly step back and assess the head coaching position prior to any other moves.
