BYU Football had another historic year that started with many question marks. The Cougars were able to end it with a 12-win season and a win in the Poptarts bowl. Their only two losses came from the same team, which is now ranked number four and in the College Football Playoffs. BYU Football faced a big question of who would start at quarterback this year after the departure of Jake Retzlaff, and the answer happened to be Bear Bachmeier, a true freshman. The Cougars finished second in the Big 12 and ranked twelfth in the country. This 12-win season was Kalani Sitake’s third season with ten or more wins.
The newcomer of the year goes to Carsen Ryan, who transferred from Utah as a Tight End. He played in all 14 games this year and started 13 of them. Ryan had 620 receiving yards while at BYU and had three touchdowns. He became a weapon for Bachmeier down the stretch, and especially down the field.
Freshman of the year goes to Bear Bachmeier, who came in July after transferring from Stanford with his brother, Tiger. Bachmeier showed cougar fans that he meant business once he arrived. He won the starting job in fall camp, and from there, he has shown BYU that making him the starter was the right choice. When he played his game, he became the first BYU true freshman to start at quarterback for the Cougars.
Bachmeier, in his first year, played in all 14 games and threw for 3,033 yards while completing 64% of his passes. He had 15 passing touchdowns and seven interceptions. Bachmeier rushed for 527 yards on 147 attempts and 11 touchdowns.
Offensive Player of the Year goes to Chase Roberts. Roberts has left everything he has on the field here at BYU. The Poptarts bowl was his last game as a Cougar, and it showed because he once again left it all on the field. This season, he played in 13 games, where he had 802 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Over his career, he played in 49 games and had 2,586 yards with 18 touchdowns.
The Defensive Player of the Year goes to Faletau Satuala. Satuala rose to the occasion, time and time again this year, when injuries occurred to Jack Kelly and Isaiah Glasker. He played in all 14 games this season and had 84 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two fumbles, four pass breakups, three interceptions, and one touchdown.
The Special Teams Player of the Year goes to Parker Kingston. Kingston can be seen on offense and on special teams during the season. For his special team stats, he has 230 yards on 17 attempts and one touchdown.
