The No. 4 seed Arizona State Sun Devils faced off against the No. 5 seed Texas Longhorns at the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Day in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Arizona State has relied heavily on star running back Cam Skattebo, who helped lead the team to a Big 12 Championship after a 3-9 finish in 2023. With top wide receiver Jordyn Tyson sidelined, the Sun Devils would need a huge performance from Skattebo, who finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting, to have a shot against Texas.

The senior made a massive impact at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, stepping up when his team needed him most. Skattebo carried the ball 30 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns while also hauling in eight receptions for 99 yards. As if that wasn’t enough, the 5-foot-11, 215-pound back even threw a 42-yard touchdown pass.

Unfortunately for Skattebo and Arizona State, they fell 39-31 in double overtime.

Skattebo’s mom, Becky Skattebo, took to social media early Thursday morning to share a strong message about her son’s performance and the Sun Devils’ fight after the team trailed by 16 points in the fourth quarter.

"Such a crazy game," Becky Skattebo wrote. "SO PROUD of him and his whole team. They proved why they deserved to be there. They don't quit! He put everything he had into that game and I'll always feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to join the Sundevil Nation."

Despite the loss, Skattebo was named the Offensive MVP of the Peach Bowl.

He concludes his Sun Devils career after two standout seasons in Tempe. In 2024, he tallied 293 carries for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns.

"ASU has changed my life forever in a good way,” Skattebo said. "They've supported me through everything, put me in a position to be successful. So, I thank everybody in the ASU community."

Before transferring to Arizona State in 2023, Skattebo spent his first two college seasons with the Sacramento State Hornets.

Next up for the Rio Linda, California, native is the NFL draft.
