After an electric season led by the first overall pick, Cam Ward, Miami football hopes new transfer quarterback Carson Beck can fill in and keep the offense red-hot in 2025.
Beck entered the 2024 season with championship expectations and first-overall pick buzz, but these hopes were quickly dashed. He endured a nightmarish campaign that ended with a torn UCL in the SEC Championship. Soon after, Beck hit the transfer portal and landed in Coral Gables, hoping to revive his career and bring a title back to Miami.
While last season’s struggles left many analysts and fans skeptical that Beck could help them achieve these heights, new data suggests he may be more ready than people think.
On Monday morning, Pro Football Focus released an analytics-driven breakdown of several quarterbacks in college football. Beck landed in Tier One, under the label: “Who Will Be CFB’s Next Star?”
PFF defines this group as follows:
“This tier is filled with QBs on the cusp, each with a chance to break through and elevate both their stock and their programs.”
This tier list was compiled using one of PFF’s key metrics, Wins Above Average (WAA). WAA represents the number of wins a player contributes over an average player, using PFF passing and rushing grades, plus accurate throw percentage.
This resulted in Beck landing in the first tier, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Another chart from the article shows Beck’s performance in WAA is head and shoulders above the rest of the group:
While these charts aren’t the ultimate measure of quarterback and team success, they’re a strong indicator that Beck’s bounce-back potential is real. With a deep, talented roster and a proven offensive system, Beck taking the next step could power the Hurricanes into a serious playoff run.
