Heading into last season, there was a lot of talk about Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones building off of his strong finish to the 2023 season and potentially being a darkhorse choice for the Heisman Trophy.
One of the voices of college football, Josh Pate, had this to say on am episode of his show heading into the season:
"Virginia Tech has an opportunity to be a playoff contender late in the year, they have a chance to be an ACC title contender late in the year, they have a chance to have a dynamite run game. Now, I don't think Drones is going to have the passing numbers that some of these guys do, he is going to have to supplement it with his work with his legs, not that he is going to have triple option passing numbers, but last year, 17-3 touchdown to interception ratio, he ran for five, he needs to double that rushing touchdown number, his completion percentage needs to bump up from 58% and into the 60's and it absolutely could, it absolutely could. They are going to have a really complementary style to help him and it is going to take voters watching him. Don't be checkin box scores, which a lot of Heisman voters unfortunately do, but if that ground game is churning and as a voter, if we really care about playing in a manner that best equips your team to win football games and we understand that yards gained on the ground count just as much as yards gained through the air, if we understand that, then Kyron Drones should be in this thing as well."
Things did not go as planned last season for either Drones or Virginia Tech. Drones battled injuries and there were only flashes of the high-end talent that he displayed down the stretch of the 2023 season. Now, Drones has a new offensive coordinator and an almost entirely new supporting cast for the 2025 season, one that will be big for Drones and the entire program.
Drones is not getting the same amount of attention heading into this season as he was at this time a year ago, but CBS Sports analyst Carter Bahns says that Drones is ready to silence his critics this season:
"Last season was supposed to be a big one for Drones and Virginia Tech, but it fell off the rails straight out of the gate en route to a disappointing sub-.500 year. Drones missed four games as injuries hampered his highly anticipated second season with the Hokies. There is some post-hype value with Drones in 2025, though. The former Baylor transfer is one of college football's most dynamic athletes when he is healthy, and the expectation is that he will be fully recovered from a minor procedure by the time camp arrives."
With so many new faces on the offense and a new coordinator, what should be the reasonable expectation for Drones this season? Will we see the talented player who looked like one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the country in 2023? Or will the inconsistencies slow him down, as well as all of the new faces. Virginia Tech has a huge test to start the season against South Carolina, who had one of the best defenses in the country last season. If Drones is healthy and playing like his 2023 self, this could be a closer game than many expect.
There are plenty of new faces on Virginia Tech on both the roster and the coaching staff, but the season could hinge on Drones returning to form. Pop Watson is an intriguing young prospect, but he may still need some development while incoming Oklahoma State transfer Garret Rangel was just ok with the Cowboys. If Drones cannot be the dynamic quarterback this team needs, it could spell trouble for Virginia Tech. If he can, they could emerge as an ACC dark horse.

Boise State announces four captains for 2025 football season
There were no surprises when Boise State announced its team captains for the 2025 football season on Sunday. Offensive tackle Kage Casey, quarterback Maddux Madsen, linebacker Marco Notarainni and edge rusher Jayden Virgin-Morgan will captain a Broncos team with College Football Playoff aspirations. The four players received the most votes from their teammates. Boise State is coming off a historic 2024 season that included a second straight Mountain West title and the program’s first CFP appearance. The Broncos finished with a 12-2 overall record and checked in at No. 8 in the final AP top 25, their highest final ranking since 2011. Boise State will hold its first practice of fall camp on Monday in preparation for its Thursday, Aug. 28 opener at South Florida. Casey, a junior offensive tackle, has been named a preseason All-American by Phil Steele and Walter Camp. While considered a potential first-round NFL Draft prospect, Casey is fully focused on getting another shot at competing for a national title. “That’s one thing that really, I think, motivates us as a team and is driving us forward every single day,” Casey said at MWC media days. “We don’t want to just get there again; we want to win, and we want to win it all.” Madsen had a strong sophomore season for the Broncos, throwing for 3,018 yards and 23 touchdowns with six interceptions. The quarterback was voted 2025 preseason MWC player of the year. “He’s been counted out at Boise State before,” Broncos head coach Spencer Danielson said of Madsen at media days. “Even this time last year, is he even going to be a starter? And he just kept working, had a phenomenal sophomore campaign. I think he’s going to be one of the best football players in the country.” Notarainni, a senior linebacker, tallied 60 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries, three pass breakups and two fumble recoveries last season. He was voted first-team all-conference and was selected to the 2025 preseason all-MWC team. “Marco’s one of the top leaders on our entire team,” Danielson said. “Marco is actively looking at his team in everything he does, from workouts to the film room to walkthroughs. He holds himself to a high standard with over a 4.0 (GPA) his entire career. He’s that kid, and he brings other people with him.” Virgin-Morgan led the Broncos in sacks last season as a sophomore with 10. He was also a preseason all-MWC pick. “I feel like I’ve grown a lot in realizing that once I do my job — I do my one-eleventh — that plays will come to me,” Virgin-Morgan said. “Searching and trying to make a play and going out of your way to make a play is either going to hurt the defense or hurt you, and you’re not going to make as many plays as you would if you’re doing your one-eleventh. I think that’s one big area I’ve grown in.”

Steelers reporter shares big claim about how Aaron Rodgers has looked in training camp
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers spent the bulk of the spring as an unsigned free agent and, thus, only began officially practicing with Pittsburgh Steelers teammates during the team's three-day mandatory minicamp in June. During a Monday appearance on Pittsburgh radio station 102.5 WDVE, Steelers reporter Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette addressed how Rodgers looked during his first few training camp practices with the club. "His release is just astonishing to watch," Dulac said about Rodgers, as shared by Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot. "Everybody knows about it, and when you see it in person, you see it every day in practice, you just marvel at it. To me, he's the greatest thrower of the football I have ever seen, even at 41 (years old). That flick of that wrist and that ball comes out, it's moving and it is something to see." Rodgers was with the New York Jets when he suffered a torn Achilles four offensive snaps into the 2023 regular-season opener. He was then slowed by a nagging hip issue, injuries to both his knees, a low ankle sprain and a serious hamstring problem as the 2024 Jets went 5-12. According to Pro Football Reference, Rodgers finished last season ranked 28th in the NFL among qualified players with a 48.0 adjusted QBR and 26th with a 43.9 percent passing success rate. That said, he was also eighth with 3,897 passing yards and tied for seventh with 28 passing touchdowns. Rodgers and Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson endured some struggles during training camp sessions last summer before the two allegedly "never saw eye-to-eye" during the season. It sounds like Pittsburgh fans should be encouraged by how Rodgers performed in recent practices. "That guy can get rid of the ball as quick as anybody," Dulac added. "He made three throws in seven-on-seven (drills) the other day that the cumulative total I bet couldn't have exceeded 2.1 seconds. And two of those were for touchdowns." Rodgers wants to finish his career "the right way" and help the Steelers notch at least their first playoff win since January 2017. As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Pittsburgh at -150 betting odds to miss the playoffs for the upcoming season.
Maple Leafs Top Prospect Shatters Expectations at World Junior Showcase
The World Junior Summer Showcase is in full swing, and Maple Leafs top prospect Ben Danford is shattering expectations, truly proving how good of a player he can be. The Toronto Maple Leafs' defensive prospect, Ben Danford, is among the 44 players who were invited to Hockey Canada's World Juniors Summer Showcase. Hockey Canada finally unveiled the 44 prospects who will head to Minnesota for the showcase, after they held the roster release back while the organization dealt with several injuries, which begins Sunday and runs through August 2 in Minneapolis. Defensive prospect Ben Danford is the only Maple Leafs player invited to the annual showcase, where Canada's World Junior staff will get their first look at what their team might look like for the 2026 World Juniors, which will also take place in Minnesota in December. Danford is being called the best player at the World Juniors Summer Showcase Danford has been exceeding expectations, and one source revealed that he has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase so far. The source said Danford is steady, smart, and hard to ignore on the ice. 'Ben Danford has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase he's steady, smart, and impossible to ignore. Makes every shift count, whether he's breaking up plays or starting the rush. Canada's blue line is in good hands.' - An unnamed source The Maple Leafs selected Danford with their first pick (31st overall) at the 2024 NHL Draft. During his visit to Toronto's development camp earlier this month, the defender revealed that he's receiving mentorship from current Leafs defensemen as well as some alumni like Mark Giordano. The 6-foot-2 Danford could make for an excellent fit for Canada should he make the team. He is responsible in his own end, and he demonstrated leadership capabilities when he was named captain of the Oshawa Generals ahead of the 2024-25 OHL season.
Steelers Defender Already Flashing Signs Of Dominance In Training Camp: 'He's Feeling A Bit More Comfortable'
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made multiple significant upgrades on the defensive side of the ball throughout the 2025 offseason. Pittsburgh traded veteran free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange of Jonnu Smith and superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey, as the team was able to make a crucial upgrade in the secondary. The Steelers also signed generational linebacker TJ Watt to a three-year extension as well, as Watt is now the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Despite multiple new players looking to make an impact in 2025, many returning players will look to play at an elite level as well. Among those players is linebacker Patrick Queen, as the veteran will look to play a bigger role throughout his second season in Pittsburgh. Queen appeared in all 17 games last season for the Steelers, as the former Baltimore Raven is a reliable linebacker who has remained extremely durable throughout his career. When asked for his opinion on Queen's performance throughout the opening week of training camp, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly took a moment to share his thoughts. "I'll tell you another guy who's stepped it up in non-padded practices, Patrick Queen," Kaboly stated. "He seems like he's feeling a bit more comfortable here, so that's huge." Kaboly then went on to speak about Queen's availability in 2025, claiming that the veteran will more than likely be on the field for almost every defensive snap. "It looks like they are going to have two three-down linebackers," Kaboly explained. Kaboly's comments may not come as surprising to many, as Queen was elite during his time in Baltimore and is widely expected to play at that level again in his second year in the Steel City. Despite being a Pro Bowler in 2024, Queen had an up and down season throughout his first year in Pittsburgh. The veteran was credited with one sack and two forced fumbles in 2024, as the former Raven was unable to record a single interception throughout the entire season. With Queen set to have a bounce back year in 2025, many feel as if the Steelers have a top defensive unit in all of football. Pittsburgh's defense features an encouraging mix of younger and veteran players, as Queen finds himself playing amongst some of the top pass rushers in the league. Queen looking more comfortable throughout his second training camp in Pittsburgh is a massive win for the Steelers, as the linebacker may very well get back on track in 2025. Steelers' Patrick Queen Could Play A Major Off-Field Role In 2025 With Queen set to thrive in 2025, the Steelers are expected to continue evaluating the veteran throughout the course of training camp. Pittsburgh is expected to keep a close eye on rookies Jack Sawyer and Carson Bruener as well, as both players will look to shine in their first year with the Steelers. Queen may emerge as an excellent mentor for both Sawyer and Bruener, as the rookie linebackers will be under the wing of multiple elite veterans throughout their rookie season. Sawyer, a fourth-round selection out of Ohio State, is a promising young linebacker who will look to turn heads throughout training camp. Sawyer was a star at the college level as well, as the former Buckeye played a crucial role in Ohio State's National Championship run last season. Bruener is expected to be a top beneficiary of Queen's presence, as the former Washington star will try to fight his way towards a bigger role in 2025. With Queen set to play at an elite level once again in 2025, the Steelers' defense is widely expected to be a top unit in all of football. Queen should be an excellent mentor for the younger members of the defense as well, as the veteran could help multiple players thrive this season. With the first few days of training camp officially complete, the Steelers are expected to continue evaluating the performance of Queen and other key players.
