The Cincinnati Bearcats suffered a narrow 20-17 loss to Nebraska in Week 1 but will have a chance to bounce back at home against Bowling Green on Saturday, Sept. 6. Now in their third season as a Big 12 member, the Bearcats are looking to turn things around after back-to-back losing campaigns.
Saturday’s non-conference showdown is set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+. Cincinnati enters the game as 22.5-point favorites with the over/under set at 46.5 total points. Here are two key players to watch in this game, followed by the top storylines for each team, and a prediction from Heartland College Sports.
Brendan Sorsby (QB, Cincinnati)
It’s no secret that quarterback Brendan Sorsby struggled through the air against Nebraska, completing just 52% of his passes. However, he showcased his dual-threat ability, rushing for 96 yards and two touchdowns to keep the Bearcats in the game. This week, he’ll have a chance to find rhythm in the passing game against a weaker Bowling Green defense. With a more favorable matchup and the comfort of playing at home, Sorsby is in a strong position to settle in and take a step forward as a passer.
Kaderris Roberts (RB, Bowling Green)
While Bowling Green controlled the tempo in Week 1, running back Kaderris Roberts led the charge offensively, racking up 66 yards on 5.5 yards per carry. He anchored a Falcons rushing attack that totaled 159 yards in the win. Now, with a matchup against a Cincinnati defense that gave up 110 rushing yards last week, Roberts will need to deliver another strong performance if Bowling Green hopes to play spoiler.
Cincinnati Offensive Identity Still Forming
Cincinnati totaled just 17 points in Week 1 and failed to capitalize on key red-zone trips. The Bearcats have to find balance and rhythm, especially through the air, to avoid another low-scoring contest. Establishing the run early could open up more opportunities downfield for Sorsby, who needs an efficient performance. Saturday’s game presents a great opportunity for the Bearcats to reset the tone for the 2025 season.
A Statement Opportunity for the MAC
Bowling Green heads into Saturday with a chance to make noise on a national level. A win over a Big 12 opponent, even one still trying to find its footing in the Big 12 like Cincinnati, would send a strong message that the Falcons are legitimate MAC contenders. Following a steady showing from quarterback Drew Pyne, Bowling Green’s offense will need another low-mistake outing to stay competitive.
While Cincinnati’s offense struggled in Week 1, the talent gap, especially up front, should tilt this game in the Bearcats’ favor. Sorsby will have more time to throw and more space to operate out of the pocket, and that dual-threat capability should help open up the offense. Bowling Green has a chance to keep it competitive if Roberts can control the tempo on the ground, but Cincinnati’s overall experience and depth should be enough to secure its first win of the season at home.
