CJ Carr versus Steve Angeli and Kenny Minchey at quarterback, and other offensive position battles to watch heading into Notre Dame spring practice
Austin Hough / South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame football enters a really interesting spring practice session. With the longer college football season, that has dwarfed our expectations for the spring. Even with that being true, the Fighting irish coaching staff will use that couple of week period to start to figure out the pulse of the team.

On the offensive side of the football, there are several position groups that will have fierce competition this offseason. Here are the spots that should be under the biggest attention, and scrutiny. It will shape just how good of an offense we should expect under offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock in year two.

QUARTERBACK

Everyone is going to hyperfocus on the quarterback battle, and it is very understandable. With Riley Leonard heading off to the NFL this offseason, we have our first true quarterback battle for the first time in several years. That battle will rage on between Steve Angeli, Kenny Minchey, and CJ Carr. Each has a very unique sell as the starting quarterback with the Fighting Irish.

With Angeli, he brings the most experience on the field and in the system. Minchey arguably brings the best balance of arm talent and athleticism, while Carr is probably the best processor and most gifted natural thrower. It will be interesting to see which quarterback takes the reigns this offseason, and it begins in the spring.

LEFT TACKLE

The offensive line is going to be very interesting to watch this offseason. There is a question at left tackle, where Anthonie Knapp started 15 games last season. He was filling in for Charles Jagusah, who was going to be the starter before a preseason pectoral injury. Those are the main competitors for the position.

With Knapp being somewhat limited this spring, there is a huge opportunity for Jagusah to potentially lock down the position. There is a chance that he can make a statement, and cause some shuffling up front. Sophomore Guerby Lambert is the wildcard to watch.

RIGHT GUARD

Depending on how left tackle works out, it could impact the battle at right guard. Most would consider either Jagusah and Knapp the front runner there is either lose out at left tackle. That does, however, undersell very talented players such as Sullivan Absher. The competition at right guard is going to be fierce, with a ton of talented players fighting for the starting spot.
