CJ Carr’s Debut: A Mixed Bag That Still Has Notre Dame Believers
- Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr throws the ball during a football practice at Irish Athletic Center on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, in South Bend.

Look, we’ve all seen those freshman quarterbacks who come in looking like deer in headlights, throwing passes into the third row and generally making everyone wonder if they accidentally wandered onto the field from band practice. CJ Carr wasn’t one of those guys Sunday night against Miami. Sure, the Fighting Irish lost 27-24, but Carr was a standout.

The Good: When CJ Carr Looked Like Magic

Let’s start with the obvious highlight reel moment that had Marcus Freeman going through every emotion imaginable. Picture this. Third-and-goal from the Miami 7, pressure coming from every angle, and CJ Carr doing his best Houdini impression in the backfield. But here’s the thing about Carr. The kid kept his eyes downfield while dancing around Miami defenders.

Then he found Micah Gilbert in the end zone for both players’ first collegiate touchdown. The final numbers tell a story of competence, not catastrophe: 19-of-30 for 221 yards, two touchdown passes, one interception, and 11 carries for 16 yards with a rushing score. For a guy making his first real college football start against a top-10 team, those aren’t exactly amateur hour statistics.

The Not-So-Good: Growing Pains Were Real

Now, let’s not pretend this was a perfect performance. CJ Carr threw an interception in the fourth quarter that gave Miami a short field and essentially gift-wrapped three points for the Hurricanes. It was one of those plays where you could see the inexperience showing – a quick out that turned into a tip drill nightmare. But here’s what separated Carr from your typical freshman meltdown.

He bounced back pretty flawlessly. After that pick, he led Notre Dame on two scoring drives, including the game-tying touchdown run with 3:21 left. Most freshmen would have crawled into a shell after turning the ball over in crunch time. The offensive line didn’t exactly do him any favors either, and it forced Carr into some uncomfortable situations. A couple of those sacks came from intentional groundings – not exactly ideal, but it shows the kid was thinking instead of just panicking.

What the Future Holds for Notre Dame’s New Signal Caller

The most encouraging thing about CJ Carr’s performance wasn’t necessarily the statistics – it was the poise. Watch that scramble drill touchdown again, and you’ll see a freshman who looked comfortable in chaos. That’s not something you can teach in practice. Either you have it or you don’t, and Carr clearly has it.

Sure, he needs to work on his decision-making in the run-pass option game. Freeman was pretty clear that there were times when Carr should have just handed the ball to Jeremiyah Love instead of trying to do everything himself. Love finished with just 33 rushing yards on 10 carries, which tells you all you need to know about how the offensive flow went.

The Reality Check Nobody Wants to Hear

Let’s be honest about what we witnessed Sunday night. Notre Dame lost a game they probably should have won, and some of that falls on the freshman quarterback, who made freshman quarterback mistakes. The interception was costly, and there were definitely moments where Carr forced throws he shouldn’t have attempted. Naming CJ Carr as the starting QB is the right choice with the potential he has.

CJ Carr’s performance Sunday night was the kind that had opposing coaches taking notes and Notre Dame fans allowing themselves to dream about what this offense might look like by November. The raw talent is obvious, and the composure under pressure is remarkable for someone his age. The supporting cast around him is still championship caliber. If Sunday night was any indication, Fighting Irish fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about their quarterback situation.
