Clemson’s top receiver carried the ball on a punt return in the third quarter and was hit low, sending him flipping through the air and landing awkwardly on the back of his head/neck.
The stadium visibly reacted as Wesco hit the turf; he stood up and jogged to the sideline under his own power but did not receive medical treatment on the field and did not return to the game.
Later, Clemson announced he had been transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Coach Dabo Swinney declined to offer medical specifics after the game but repeatedly described the situation as serious and asked fans to keep Wesco and his family in their prayers.
Swinney said the team was “concerned enough to get it checked” and that Wesco was taken to a local hospital.
Those comments came in the immediate postgame availability and have been the basis for media updates.
Wesco entered the game as Clemson’s leading receiver (31 catches for 537 yards and six touchdowns this season) but did not record a catch in the loss to SMU.
As a freshman in 2024 he was a Freshman All-American after catching 41 passes for 708 yards and five scores and averaged 17.3 yards per reception.
The injury compounds a tough afternoon for the Tigers in a 35-24 home loss that has fans and the program waiting for medical clarity.
Clemson also saw offensive lineman Collin Sadler carted off with a leg injury in the fourth quarter; Swinney later said X-rays were negative and that Sadler’s injury was not a fracture.
Those multiple injuries amplify the immediate concern for a team already dealing with inconsistent results on the field.
Because the team has only confirmed that Wesco was transported for evaluation, the timeline for any public medical update will come from Clemson’s medical staff and athletic communications.
Fans, teammates and coaches were visibly rattled and Swinney asked for privacy and prayers while the program and Wesco’s family await more information.
This story will be updated when information comes available.
