With half of the state’s Division I teams on a bye this week, it was up to the other three to keep a good season of football in Utah going. The effort was led by BYU, getting off to their fifth 5-0 start in program history, their fourth under head coach Kalani Sitake.
Bear Bachmeier and BYU had a solid game on Friday night that they won, 38-24, over West Virginia. There were some negatives to this game for the Cougars. They had three turnovers, and all-Big 12 and maybe all-American linebacker Jack Kelly was lost to an injury. At the time of this writing, that injury is still undisclosed. Bachmeier and his wide receivers had a great game, with Bear eclipsing the 300-yard passing mark for the first time in his young career. BYU continues to grow every week on both sides of the ball, and are 28-2 in their first five games of the last six seasons. Next week, they travel to Tucson to take on Arizona.
Kyle Whittingham’s squad had this week off before they have a pair of big games, back-to-back, in the state of Utah. Next week, they’ll host defending Big 12 Champions Arizona State. They’ll follow that up with a trip to Provo to battle BYU in the Holy War.
The Aggies had the week off after their last non-conference game at Vanderbilt. They’ll have an even longer road trip next week when they head to Honolulu to take on the Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii. Hawaii is 4-2 this season, and has been a tough road trip for teams so far in 2025.
The third team in the state of Utah to have an off week to open the month of October, Weber State will host Sacramento State next week, at home, in Ogden. The Wildcats will be after their first conference win in the Big Sky for 2025.
Tech suffered their fifth loss of the season, their third by a touchdown or less when they lost 23-17 at Central Arkansas. The Trailblazers are now tied for last place in the United Athletic Conference. It doesn’t get any easier next week with #3 Tarleton State comes to St. George to play the Trailblazers.

Like their brothers in St. George the Thunderbirds in Cedar City lost their fifth game of 2025 on Saturday. It was their fifth straight loss, their fourth straight to a ranked team. They scored 42 points, increasing their season average to 37 points per game. Their defense however gave up 52 points, increasing their season average to an awful 39-plus points per game. This was the third time the Thunderbirds gave up 50 or more points.

Running back Joshua Dye was again fantastic with 19 carries for 189 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Thunderbirds fans better enjoy Dye, because this might be the last season the sophomore spends at SUU. FBS teams will be after him to hit the transfer portal at the end of this season. Southern Utah has next week off before hosting Abilene Christian on October 18th.

Joshua Dye, Chase Roberts, Bear Bachmeier and Parker Kingston were the guys who all could have been the player of the week. I went with Kingston because this was his best game of the year, and his getting on track can be huge for BYU. Kingston had four catches for 111 yards and two total yards.
