College Football Quarterback Transferring After Head Coach's Retirement

On Wednesday, Central Michigan head coach Jim McElwain announced he is retiring at the end of the season.

McElwain, 62, will close our his coaching career against Northern Illinois on Nov. 30 before sliding into the CMU athletic department as Special Assistant to the Athletic Director. He is 33-35 with two bowl appearances at Central Michigan since 2019, and counting his stints at Colorado State and Florida, McElwain holds an overall record of 77-63 with six bowl trips.

"My wife Karen and I have cherished every moment of our football journey," McElwain said in a statement. "We want to express our deepest gratitude to the all the players who have welcomed us into their lives, and the incredible coaches and support staff at every stop along the way—it has been a true privilege to work alongside all of them. The lifelong friendships that were created mean the world to us."

On Thursday, Chippewas quarterback Bert Emanuel Jr. announced he will be entering the NCAA transfer portal with three years of eligibility left.

“After much prayer and deep conversations with coaches, mentors, and God, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal, with three years of eligibility remaining," Emanuel wrote. "This decision brings a mix of excitement and nervousness, as I embark on a new chapter of my life. I trust that wherever I land is a place God has already prepared for me.

"To the Chippewa Fam, thank you for welcoming this Texas boy into your hearts and making me feel at home in Michigan. Your unwavering love and support have meant the world to me, and I will carry those memories with me as I move forward. My story isn’t over yet, and I’m excited for the adventures that wait."

The son of former NFL wide receiver Bert Emanuel, Emanuel Jr. completed 4-of-6 passes this season for 99 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

In 2023, Emanuel went 19-of-37 passing for 286 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He debuted in 2022, throwing for 54 yards on 4-of-8 passing.

Emanuel has also rushed for 844 yards and 12 touchdowns in three seasons.
