The Big 12 Conference fined the Colorado Buffaloes (2-3, 0-2 Big 12) $50,000 following inappropriate chants by their student section during their game against No. 23 BYU (4-0, 1-0) on Sept. 27. Videos captured Colorado students chanting “(Expletive) the Mormons” during BYU’s 24-21 victory in Boulder, sparking widespread criticism.

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark announced the penalty, emphasizing that “hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference.” The fine reflects the conference’s commitment to fostering respect and inclusivity at all events.

Coach Prime’s Apology

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders issued a heartfelt apology during his weekly news conference.

“On behalf of CU and our athletic department, we apologize to BYU for any derogatory statements made by our fans,” Sanders said. “That’s not who we are. Our student body is phenomenal, and we don’t want a few intoxicated individuals to define us. BYU, we love and support you.”

Fan behavior at sporting events can sometimes cross the line. Incidents like drunken fights or hateful slurs, as seen in this case, reflect poorly on the broader community. Such actions, fueled by alcohol or ignorance, undermine the spirit of sportsmanship and respect that college athletics aim to uphold. There is no need for it.

Fan Education

To move forward, Colorado’s athletic department plans to enhance fan education initiatives, promoting inclusivity and respect at games. By addressing these issues head-on, the university hopes to prevent future incidents and foster a welcoming environment for all.

The Buffaloes aim to lead by example, ensuring their fans reflect the team’s values of unity and respect. BYU is currently third in the Big 12, while Colorado is trying to stay above water. The Buffaloes are on the road this weekend against TCU (3-1, 0-1) at 7:30 p.m. ET.
