In terms of the national spotlight, the Alabama Crimson Tide will probably be viewed in a negative connotation this week. Pundits and analysts will give their opinions on why a close-fought game against South Carolina at home is a concern for Alabama.
In reality, however, the game on Saturday showed something deep within the coaching staff and the players. Something that wasn't present on the 2024 version of the team: grit.
And where did that grit come from? The locker room explained after the game.
" It’s a great win, it’s a tough win," QB Ty Simpson said via Bama Central on YouTube after the game. "Guys coming together and just hugging each other like, ‘Happy for you. Proud of you. Got your back.’ The amount of ‘I got your back’ in that locker room right now is amazing. I’ve never felt that in a locker room before— the amount of trust, having each other’s backs. The amount of love we have for one another is like no other.”
It may seem cheesy or corny, but that comment from Simpson on the state of the lcoker room, matches the play on the field. Last year was marred by discipline issues. There were bad penalties, temper tantrums, and moments that made you stop and say, "That would have never happened under Nick Saban." The culture looked like it was eroding before our eyes.
It wasn't necessarily the losses, rather the way that Alabama was losing. And then it started all over again in Week 1, where, with the game's momentum shifting back in Alabama's favor, a defender jumps on an FSU player, extends the drive instead of forcing a punt, and the Seminoles go on to win.
Since that point, everything has changed.
Now you see players like Ty Simpson picking up Ryan Williams after drops. You see Kalen DeBoer greeting his players off the field after every drive, good or bad. You see one of the most underrated talking points on a good football team: a sound culture.
And the winning and the culture tend to go hand in hand.
"We just play for each other," LB Deontae Lawson added. "We don’t want to go in that locker room and look each other in the eye with disappointment. I think that’s the biggest thing.”
