Marco Andretti, former Indy 500 pole winner, announces retirement from racing

A member of one of racing's most prominent families announced his retirement from motorsports on Wednesday.

Marco Andretti, the son of Michael Andretti and the grandson of Mario Andretti, announced in a social media post that he is retiring from racing. The 38-year-old from Nazareth, Pa., is a veteran of 253 starts in the NTT IndyCar Series, including 20 starts in the Indianapolis 500. Marco Andretti won two IndyCar races and the pole position for the 2020 Indianapolis 500.

Like his grandfather, Andretti also briefly ventured into NASCAR, making 11 starts in the ARCA Menards Series, eight starts in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and one start in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Marco Andretti will always be tied to Indianapolis

Marco Andretti's legacy will forever be foremost tied to Indianapolis, where he made the final five starts of his IndyCar career. In his final Indy 500 start in May, Andretti qualified and finished 29th after an early crash took him out of the race.

Andretti's most famous moment at IMS came in his Indy 500 debut in 2006, when he battled his father, Michael, and Sam Hornish Jr. for the win. Marco Andretti led at the white flag but was passed by Hornish on the final lap, leading to an excruciating runner-up finish. Michael Andretti finished right behind his son in third.

"I am very much at peace with the next chapter in my life after dedicating three decades to the sport," Andretti said in a post. "I will be prioritizing most of my time on being a great father to my daughter, Miura, and tending to my other business ventures."

Marco Andretti's racing career spanned two decades and provided plenty of memorable moments that only furthered the Andretti family's racing legacy.
