Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame program have recruited the quarterback position extremely well over the last several years. They have managed to land the likes of Kenny Minchey, CJ Carr, Blake Hebert, and Noah Grubbs, which is an impressive collection of signal callers.
Even with that recent recruiting success, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and quarterback coach Gino Guidugli are implementing a new recruiting strategy in the 2027 class. Heading into this past weekend, they were the only major program that hadn’t offered a single quarterback in the class. Every P4 program had offered at least one quarterback.
Notre Dame did finally extend a couple of offers the last few days, two to be specific. Those were given to Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian star Peyton Houston and Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb signal caller Teddy Jarrard. Those are the two quarterbacks that the Irish staff have gravitated toward early on.
Behind the scenes, Notre Dame has been very active recruiting the 2027 quarterback. The staff has been hosting a ton of talented signal callers on campus, as well as getting on the road to see them throw. With the later offers, however, it is going to be interesting to see how this strategy plays out.
The early returns haven’t been overly positive. There was a crystal ball put in on Tuesday for Houston to end up with the Oklahoma Sooners. Maybe it wouldn’t have helped in the end for the Georgia native to have had that offer earlier, but it’s also not a great look to extend a kid who seems to be leaning toward another program. Notre Dame may not have read that recruitment well enough.

If Houston does indeed opt for the Sooners, it would be a massive commitment for head coach Brent Venables. Despite being just 5-11 and 196 pounds, Houston is a tremendous talent. He is coming off of a dynamite sophomore season where he managed to record 5,170 yards of total offense and 45 touchdowns. Houston is a special talent.
Should Houston come off the board in the near future, that would leave just Jarrard left of the early quarterback offers. If that does happen, you would assume that the board would expand a bit. There’s a conversation that will undoubtedly happen for the new offers about them being secondary options.
It’s a risky strategy. Let’s see how this works out.
