Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti was quick to defend TCU quarterback transfer Josh Hoover when meeting with reporters on Thursday, following comments by Sonny Dykes last month regarding Hoover’s turnover rate.

On an episode of State of the Frogs, Dykes mentioned Hoover’s 42 turnovers – including 33 interceptions – in three seasons with the Horned Frogs.

The comments sparked a flurry of criticism around the internet, and, sure enough, the clip found its way across Cignetti’s desk, too.

Hoover officially entered the transfer portal earlier this year following an 8-4 record in his third and final season at TCU. The Heath, Texas, native finished the 2025 season with 3,472 yards, 29 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and 73.6 QBR.

Indiana Football is Full-Steam Ahead

Indiana, the top seed in the latest College Football Playoff notably won its first-ever national title 27-21 over No. 10 Miami behind Heisman winner and projected No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza.

On Thursday, Cigentti commented on Hoover as a quarterback and how his evaluation of the transfer has gone through the first weeks of spring ball.

“We’re still learning about him,” Cignetti said. “You know, a couple different things there. We’d like to see him play a little faster, practice with a little more urgency, drive every ball. I don’t know what was asked of him where he came from in terms of practice, but no plays are like a throw off.”

Cignetti also touched on Dykes’ recent comments, specifically Hoover’s turnover rate.

“I’m excited about Josh first of all – let’s be clear about that,” Cignetti said. “He’s got a body of work in terms of winning football games, passing yards, touchdown passes. Got to clean up some of the turnovers, obviously, which (Dykes) made light of. But, you know, when Josh got here, he met his two best friends – great defense and a really good run game – and he was never the same after that.”

Now, Cigentti didn’t have to coment on Dykes or TCU at all – but it makes sense he’d go this route and insert a little humor to the subject.

It’s a tricky new era of the portal where coaches are going to be asked about guys more and more often as long as the podcast mics and availabilities keep rising. In this case, I think Dykes was truly just making a valid point about the turnover numbers Hoover was producing at TCU and not trying to slip a jab in just because his starter was out the door.
