CLEMSON, SC – In a powerful message about mental fortitude and intrinsic motivation, Head Coach Dabo Swinney explained how star quarterback Cade Klubnik navigates the relentless external narratives that surround him. Swinney made it clear that while outside opinions can be "fuel," they can never be the "fire" that drives a player.

"Last year this time they said he's terrible so he had to block that out," Swinney recalled at Media Day, referencing Klubnik's early career criticism. "You got to block out that you suck, you got to block out that Sweeney should have went and got a portal guy over you… But you also got to block out oh you're the Heisman, oh you're the greatest thing ever literally 12 months later."

Swinney stressed that for both coaches and players, external opinions "can't be your motivation." He elaborated, "It can be fuel for you… but it can't be the fire, you know, because if that's your fire, other people's opinions and narratives, if that's your fire, you're going to be really inconsistent."

The true source of drive, according to Swinney, must come from within. "Your fire's got to come from within, it's got to be your purpose, your why, you know, your foundation to your life, that's got to be your fire, and you grab any fuel when you can, if people want to give you some free fuel, you take it."

Swinney expressed immense pride in Klubnik, calling him a "model dude" who is "committed in every sense of that word." He noted Klubnik's significant improvements last year – taking care of the ball, pushing it downfield, using his legs – but emphasized that "last year doesn't carry over." For Cade Klubnik, and indeed all of Swinney's players, success is ultimately determined by the "work that you put in when nobody's watching."
