Dave Portnoy Says He’d ‘Get Kenny Dillingham on a Silver Platter’ at Michigan

Michigan’s head coaching search has gone off the rails enough that even Dave Portnoy is throwing his hat in the ring. The Barstool founder and longtime Wolverines fan went on one of his usual rants this week, saying he could land Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham as Michigan’s next head coach “on a silver platter” if they’d just let him run the search himself.

Yes, he actually said that. In Portnoy’s world, with enough money and power, it’s just a matter of flying out to Tempe and getting the deal done. “We don’t know if the AD is gonna be there, we don’t know if the president is gonna be there. So just give it to the donor. Give it to Larry Ellison. Give it to me. I’ll go close Dillingham! I’ll get Dillingham on a silver platter in 48 hours if you give me the resources,” Portnoy said during one of his latest clips floating around Twitter.

Now, nobody’s pretending Portnoy is actually leading Michigan’s search, but in fairness, nobody really knows who is. The situation in Ann Arbor has been cloudy ever since Sherrone Moore’s legal issues surfaced. Between the admin drama and the lack of clear direction, this thing feels wide open, which is probably why Dillingham’s name has been brought up so much.

As for Dillingham, he’s in the middle of trying to keep Arizona State’s roster together, and multiple outlets have reported that the school is working on a contract amendment to lock him in. Still, there’s no denying the Michigan rumors picked up steam, and Portnoy leaning into it just added fuel to the fire.

This feels more like a Portnoy moment than it does real movement, but it’s worth noting when the guy with deep pockets and an even deeper Michigan obsession goes public with that kind of energy. He’s clearly fed up with the process and would rather take the wheel himself than wait around for the athletic department to figure it out.

Whether it’s Dillingham or someone else, Michigan’s coaching search still feels like it’s in first gear. But if Portnoy gets his way, the Wolverines might be boarding a private jet to Tempe sooner than expected.
