Colorado head coach Deion Sanders isn't afraid to shake things up early in the season. He made that very clear this Tuesday.
Last Friday night, Colorado suffered a 27-20 loss at home to Georgia Tech. The Buffaloes received an inconsistent performance from their starting quarterback, Kaidon Salter. He completed 17-of-28 passes for 159 yards with a touchdown. He also had 43 yards and an additional score on the ground.
Salter spent the past four seasons at Liberty before transferring to Colorado. Back in 2023, he finished the year with 2,876 passing yards and 1,089 rushing yards.
Sanders announced that Salter will remain Colorado's starter for Week 2 against Delaware. However, he'll have to give up some of his reps.
The Hall of Famer confirmed that he'll play two quarterbacks against Delaware. That means four-star freshman Julian Lewis will get his chance to shine.
"He’s playing this week for sure," Sanders told reporters. "I know when we’re going to see him. You just don’t know when you’re going to see him
Sanders isn't ready to make a quarterback change this early in the season. He believes it's important to let Lewis naturally develop at the collegiate level.
"Work with me. He’s playing. All right? He’s playing. You’ve got to understand, I love that kid, man, I really do. And I want him to be extremely successful. Sometimes you don’t want to rush things," Sanders said, via Denver Sports. "You want to make sure the timing is right. I don’t think the time was appropriate last week. I really don’t at the way the game was flowing, the rhythm of the game, but this week, I made up my mind already before. Now, he’s going to play. I don’t give a darn about the flow of nothing, he’s playing."
As of now, Salter has the edge for QB1. His grip on the starting job is clearly slipping though.
Colorado has to get its quarterback situation figured out before its showdown with Houston on Sept. 12.
