  • “I’m not crazy enough to think that all of you gonna be in this room next year.”
  • Sanders’ player-first, exposure-focused approach highlights his unconventional leadership in modern college football.

Deion Sanders, an NFL Hall of Famer turned college football coach, has done an incredible job of turning the Colorado Buffaloes program into one of the most compelling storylines in all of football. The two-time Super Bowl-winning cornerback translated his playing style into a unique brand of coaching, which has led Colorado to make all sorts of noise on the national level since Sanders took over as head coach in 2023.

This season, Colorado is 3-4. They are coming off a 24-17 win against the Iowa State Cyclones in Week 7 and will be looking to make it back-to-back victories when they return to action in Week 9 against the No. 23 Utah Utes on Oct. 25. The Buffaloes are currently on their bye week, which prompted an unexpected decision from Sanders on Wednesday.

It has now been two years since Sanders took over the helm in Colorado. Since arriving in Boulder, the NFL legend has employed a player-first leadership style that emphasizes accountability. At the same time, Coach Prime has shown a high regard for exposure and his players’ individual branding.

Sanders turned the Colorado program around in his brief stint as head coach, and the massive roster turnover has played a pivotal role in the same. The transfer portal has been central in how he’s reshaped the program, which is why Sanders himself understands how important this aspect is for both the team and his players.

On Wednesday, the 58-year-old addressed his team ahead of their game against Utah. Sanders took the opportunity to announce his decision to hold a full scrimmage for the players who are on the fringes of the depth chart.

"A lot of you guys that don't get to play, you're going to get your chance today," Sanders said. "This is your chance because I'm not crazy to think that all of you are going to be in this room next year. Some of you are going to jump in the (transfer) portal. This is an opportunity for you to get some portal fame.

"I'm the kind of coach that's going to make sure we cut it, hype it up, give it to you however you want it, and make sure you're looking good in your portal tape. Some of you guys (that) don't get to play that plan on jumping, you already made up your mind to jumping. So I’m just trying to help you jump."

Sanders is anything but a traditional coach, and his decision here to shine a spotlight on his bench players is a testament to that. Not only is he giving them their 15 minutes of fame, but He is also doing so to facilitate their imminent departure.

The Colorado coach went on to say that he’s done whatever he can to make sure the special scrimmage session is as memorable as possible for the players.

"This is your day," he continued. "I think we got cheerleaders for you today. I don't know, we got band members. I know they're trying but I was trying to get the whole shebang to make you have the feeling that it's gameday for you. ... Do your thing. Have a great day today. You guys that's playing in the game, get your minds right because it's gameday."

This is Sanders’ unconventional leadership style on full display. This move reflects the former AP Defensive Player of the Year’s pragmatic understanding of modern college football, where personal exposure and roster mobility are essential realities.

Sanders’ message was equal parts honest and motivational. This is the mindset he wants his players to have heading into their Week 9 matchup against the Utes. Regardless of his players’ status on the team, Sanders is making sure everyone gets their chance to shine.
