Deion Sanders Challenges the Accuracy of QB Speculations
Deion Sanders Challenges the Accuracy of QB Speculations 3

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, during his weekly press conference, addressed a fresh report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel stating that sources reveal the sophomore quarterback Ryan Staub will be expected to take the starting role for the Buffaloes’ upcoming Big 12 opener against Houston on Friday night:

“Sources: Colorado is expected to start Ryan Staub at quarterback for the game at Houston on Friday night. He entered the Delaware game on Saturday as the third-string quarterback and shined, completing 7 of 10 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns.”

Sanders reportedly responded to the speculation as false. “In today’s media, we don’t care about being correct anymore. We just want to be first,” Sanders stated, as reported by On3 on X.

With Shedeur Sanders now in the NFL after being selected in the 2025 draft, the Buffaloes entered the season with a revamped QB room. Kaidon Salter, who was a proven transfer from Liberty with a 23-6 record as a starter in Boulder, also highly touted freshman Julian Lewis and Staub.

Lewis was ranked No. 12 overall in the 2025 recruiting class. Staub, a redshirt sophomore, lingered as more of an afterthought, heading into the year. The speculation began after Colorado’s Saturday win over Delaware, where coach Sander gave the three quarterbacks minutes in the game. Salter started the match but gave way before halftime, giving Lewis room for a few minutes.

Then Staub entered and delivered exceptionally; he completed 7 of 10 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, leading his team to claim the victory over Delaware. His performance has since raised questions as to whether Coach Prime might make QB adjustment for the conference debut. That outing sparked questions about whether Sanders might shake things up for the conference debut.

Thamel’s report on Tuesday morning fueled the fire, citing that Staub would indeed start against the Cougars, benching Salter after just two games. “Staub’s emergence from third-stringer to starter over Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and highly-regarded freshman Julian Lewis comes as surprise. When asked about the future at quarterback in the postgame, Deion Sanders said: ‘I’m not lost for direction.'”

A recent statement from David Ubben shared by On3 on X reports that Sanders made it clear he hasn’t finalized or announced any decision: “Deion Sanders on the report that Ryan Staub is his new starting QB: ‘In today’s media, we don’t care about being correct anymore. We just want to be first.’ Said Staub has been taking the majority of first-team reps, however.”

Deion Sanders on the report that Ryan Staub is his new starting QB: “In today’s media, we don’t care about being correct anymore. We just want to be first.”

That leaves it up to interpretation, implying that the coach is playing his cards close to his vest in weighing possibilities. Salter’s dual-threat approach provided experience, but early-season action has not jelled for him. Lewis has blue-chip potential in the long term, but his inexperience catches up with him.

Staub’s unexpected eruption, like a David vs. Goliath tale Sanders himself likened to the film “Rudy,” has provided competition where there was minimal to start. The Buffaloes stand at 1-1 following their difficult week one loss to Georgia Tech, 20-27, so this matchup with Houston will become imperative for Big 12 momentum.

Friday draws near, and the question remains, having everyone curious about who will be making the snaps under center.
