Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes pulled off one of the biggest upsets during Week 7 of the college football season.
The Buffs knocked off the No. 22 Iowa State Cyclones 24-17, ending what was a two-game losing streak on the season, while also giving the program its first victory against a ranked opponent since Sanders' first game as head coach in 2023 against TCU. After multiple down games, Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter played arguably his best game as a Buff, completing 16-of-25 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns.
His second touchdown pass came with 4:26 remaining in the third quarter, giving Colorado a 21-17 lead that ended up being the difference. As a result of the win, fans in Boulder rushed onto Folsom Field, which led to many assuming that the program would be on the receiving end of a $50,000 fine.
However, as reported by Buffzone's Brian Howell, the conference opted to not fine the Buffs.
"The Big 12 informed Colorado on Tuesday that it "executed its field storm management procedures" and will not receive a fine for fans rushing the field after Saturday's 24-17 win against then-No. 22 Iowa State," wrote Howell on X.
While most programs around the country don't love when fans storm the field due to the hefty fine and the safety concerns, Sanders made it clear after the victory that he actually encourages fans to have some fun and storm the field.
"C’mon man," Sanders said. That ain’t right. I mean, these kids, well, we have 50,000 (fans at the game), right? We can chip in. Let’s chip in. That's how it was when I grew up. You know, we going somewhere, everybody, before you get in the car with some gas, you gotta chip in."
Although Sanders had a fun solution, it appears that fans won't have to dig into their own pockets to help pay off the fine.
As for what's next for Colorado, they moved to 3-4 on the season and are on a bye this week. When they return to action next week, it'll be against the No. 23 Utah Utes.
