After a tremendous two-year career with the Colorado Buffaloes, which saw him win Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2024 and break over 100 school records, Shedeur Sanders was selected with the No. 144 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Although he is presumably proud, Deion Sanders, his father and coach at Colorado, is still getting used to not having his son behind center, as he did from 2021 to 2024 when the two led Jackson State and Colorado to a combined 36-15 record.
As for the Browns' rookie, he is still growing accustomed to his role of scout team and emergency quarterback.
Under the designation of emergency quarterback, Sanders will only be able to play if both the starter, Joe Flacco, and backup, Dillon Gabriel, are injured in a game.
As both father and son grow accustomed to their new normal of being apart, "Coach Prime" appeared on Travis and Jason Kelce's "New Heights" podcast to discuss a range of topics. One of those topics was how difficult it has been for the 58-year-old Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame corner to not have his son by his side.
"I just told Shedeur 'I know you miss me,'" Sanders said. "He said 'No I know you miss me.' But you know what, man, I definitely miss him because that's all my life. They've been there. They've been right there with me the whole step of the way."
With his son now off to the NFL, Deion is unable to do his weekly walks with Shedeur before games, which saw the two stroll down the sidelines as father and son one way, but return as coach and player.
Regardless of how things have changed, it's clear that Sanders and his family are frequently catching up.
