Deion Sanders stepped to the podium at Big 12 Media Days and made one thing clear from the start. He was not there to talk about his health.
After an offseason of speculation surrounding his condition and recent absences, Sanders put the conversation to bed before it could even start.
“I’m really not going to tell you much,” Sanders said. “I’m not going to talk about my health. I’m living good. I’m living lovely. Not a care in the world.”
That was his tone throughout the session. He was upbeat and confident but quick to steer things away from personal matters. When a reporter from The Athletic asked a follow-up, Sanders responded with trademark bite, saying, “You gonna be on that bulljunk.”
Sanders has dealt with multiple health challenges in recent years, including foot surgeries and circulation issues, and has been absent from portions of Colorado’s offseason preparation.
Despite all that, Sanders clearly wants the focus to be on football. Colorado is entering its second season in the Big 12 with national attention and growing expectations. In a post-Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter world, will the Buffs have enough star power and storylines to match?
By shutting down health talk, Sanders is trying to control the message. He wants the conversation to be about Colorado’s growth, not his condition.
Media Days are often where narratives start for the season ahead, and Sanders is determined to make sure the spotlight stays on his players and the program’s goals, not his personal situation.
