The Florida Gators' offense has been a major issue through the first three games of the 2025 season. Head coach Billy Napier refused to hire an offensive coordinator and give up play calling, which was something that was widely agreed upon by fans and analysts alike. Not doing so has continued the biggest issues on offense.
It's also been tough for starting quarterback DJ Lagway. He threw five interceptions against the Tigers, with four of them coming on third down. Those interceptions resulted in 10 points for the Tigers, and that was the difference in the game.
Those struggles have everyone significantly down on the Gators, and who can blame them? This doesn't look like the team that could make a run at the College Football Playoff. They look like a team that is going to be looking for a new head coach.
Despite the woes on offense, the Gators' defense has been huge over the first three games. They shut out Long Island in week one, allowed just 18 to South Florida in week 2 and 13 of the 20 points LSU scored were on the defense with the remaining seven being a pick six. Ron Roberts' unit is playing excellent football, and it's been a big part of why the Gators had a lot of hope going into the season.
One of the more impressive stats for the unit has been their success in the first quarter. Over the last 11 games, they haven't allowed any points on the opening drive, including seven-consecutive games where they have shut out the opponent in the first quarter.
That's a killer stat. Florida's offense has rarely been able to capitalize. Here's how those scores were despite the defense putting up a zero in the first frame:

3-0 - LSU
3-0 - USF
14-0 - Long Island
3-0 - Tulane
7-0 - FSU
0-0 - Ole Miss
7-0 - LSU https://t.co/ijU3pNlS82
This is a very impressive element to the Gators' success over the last two seasons, but they haven't been able to capitalize on it nearly enough. With any kind of competent, consistent offensive attack, this team should be 3-0 right now. With Roberts' defense thriving with this kind of consistency, it will help mitigate the issues on offense, but they can only do so much.
There is still hope for the Gators if they start to show some growth on offense, but the hourglass is going faster and faster each week.
