Defensive lineman DJ Hicks is emerging as a key player for Texas A&M as the team heads into the 2024 season, and his development throughout spring practice has not gone unnoticed. Head coach Mike Elko has been particularly impressed with Hicks' growth, noting a distinct shift in his approach to the game.

“I just think there’s a level of maturity that happens over time. He’s not feeling his way through things anymore. He knows what it means to be a college football player,” Elko remarked.

Hicks' progression is evident when looking at his first two years in the program. As a freshman in 2023, Hicks played in 11 games, making an immediate impact with three tackles, including a sack in the win over Mississippi State, and earning a start in the Texas Bowl. His versatility was showcased when he added a tackle for loss and a sack against Tennessee, and he continued to contribute as a disruptive force in the defensive line, including a key pass breakup that led to a touchdown in the win over Texas.

In 2024, Hicks' role is expected to expand further. He enters spring practice with a heightened sense of intentionality and focus, qualities Elko believes will fuel his breakout season. His development is also evident in his performance in the 2024 Las Vegas Bowl, where he started and made three tackles in addition to a sack against Missouri. He also had notable tackles at South Carolina and LSU, proving he can make plays in critical moments.

Hicks' rise from a 5-star recruit in high school to a key contributor at Texas A&M shows his impressive work ethic. Ranked as the No. 1 recruit in Texas by 247 Sports, Hicks earned All-American honors and finished his high school career with 62 tackles, including 23 tackles for loss. His background in track and field, where he excelled in the discus and shot put, has also contributed to his powerful, explosive play on the field.

As Hicks continues to mature, his combination of athleticism, mental focus, and experience make him one of Texas A&M’s most promising defensive players. With Elko’s emphasis on development and preparation, Hicks is poised for a major impact this season, positioning himself as one of the team’s defensive cornerstones for 2024.
