Although the Pitt Panthers rolled with just three scholarship quarterbacks through spring ball, Kade Bell was very pleased with the progress, maturity, and overall functionality of that trio.
In an April 10 press conference prior to the spring game, Coach Bell touched on the pros of Eli Holstein entering Year Two as opposed to battling the firehose of information a year earlier.
“It's huge,” Bell said in the presser available on YouTube. “It sucks the way the season ended with him out. He missed so much time, really, the last four games or something like that, and then missing the whole ball practice, he didn't get reps there and was having surgery and all that.
“For him to come back, man, and get cleared right before spring ball, he's still not...100 percent with trusting his ankle and his body. But just having him now mentally, where he understands what we're trying to get accomplished on the field, you know?
“He understands in the meetings, likenow, he's...answering the questions. Last year when he became the starter, basically the first week of the season, it was still a whirlwind for him, you know? He was just trying to do what I'm telling him to do, you know?
“Now he's starting to understand. By the time we get to the film room, he's like, 'Yeah, I know I did this...I know what you want me to do here.' He's starting to answer the questions. As a quarterback, when you can answer the questions before the OC tells you something, that means we're going to be in a lot better situation.”
The impact of having a healthy Holstein on Saturday's was plain to see last season.

It'll be interesting to see what the Panthers can achieve offensively with Holstein back in the lineup with a fortified offensive line and a receiver room with added weapons through the transfer portal and a freshman receiver group that appeared to be more prepared for action than most anticipated.

Michigan HC Sherrone Moore gives criteria for naming starting QB
Most seem to expect that former No. 1 overall recruit and true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood is going to be the starter for the Michigan Wolverines in 2025, but head coach Sherrone Moore is still not ready to make that decision. In fact, at Big Ten Media Days, Moore was clear that a starting quarterback has not yet been named for the Wolverines. "Before anyone asks, it’s an open competition,” Moore told the media. Underwood has superstar potential, but, as mentioned, is a true freshman. Yes, he was a star at the high school level, but that doesn't necessarily mean that will all translate once the hits are for real at the college level, especially in the stacked Big Ten. That's why Michigan went out and brought in two transfer quarterbacks this offseason in former East Carolina quarterback Jake Garcia and former Fresno State quarterback Mikey Keene. They, as well, have never played Big Ten football and they'll never be confused for superstars in Ann Arbor, but they've at least thrown a touchdown at the college level. Ultimately, talent is not going to be the final determining factor for Moore — at least here in fall camp. It comes down to leadership for him. "There is no starter. When they ‘have the team’ we’ll know we have our starter," Moore said. If it comes down to pure talent alone, Underwood will likely be under center when the Wolverines open the season against New Mexico on Aug. 30. It is tough for a freshman quarterback to lead a football team, though, so it will be interesting to see which way Moore and his staff decide to go.

Yankees Traded Flourishing Infielder for Struggling Closer
The New York Yankees have made their 2025 goals abundantly clear: They're trying to return to the World Series and win it all. In an effort to do so, the Pinstripes traded pitcher Nestor Cortes and infielder Caleb Durbin to the Milwaukee Brewers this season, adding closer Devin Williams to the roster. Halfway into the season, it looks like that was a big mistake. The Yankees are now looking to fill gaps in the both the bullpen and the infield before the MLB trade deadline rolls around at the end of the month. Utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera was great at third base, but suffered a potentially season-ending injury in May. The Yankees tried to compensate by shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to third, but it was clear Chisholm excels at second, and he's since been moved back. Durbin, on the other hand, has only gotten better in Milwaukee. "Over 75 games this season, Durbin is slashing .265/.350/.382 with five homers and elite contact skills at the plate," Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media wrote. "He ranks in the 95th percentile in whiff rate and 98th in strikeout rate — rare company for a young infielder. Durbin’s advanced plate discipline would’ve been invaluable in a Yankees lineup that too often leans on boom-or-bust approaches." Then there's Devin Williams, who has been part of a shaky-at-best Yankees bullpen. He has certainly seen improvement since the beginning of the season, when he was pulled from closing duties after a blown save to the Yankees' division rival Toronto Blue Jays. However, it hasn't been quite enough. Toronto swept New York in a four game series earlier this month, securing their lead of the AL east over the Pinstripes. Williams pitched the final inning, giving up two earned runs. He has a 4.82 ERA over 37.1 innings pitched in 41 games. Williams keeps improving, and hopefully will prove that the Yankees made the right choice by acquiring him. However, that still doesn't fill the gaping hole New York has at third base, and they're likely missing Durbin's consistent abilities in the field and at the plate. The Yankees have until the July 31 MLB trade deadline to make any trades to address these issues. Three-time All-Star will be key to Fever weathering troubling Caitlin Clark injury update
Following a troubling injury update, Caitlin Clark isn't coming back to rescue the Indiana Fever anytime soon. But Aliyah Boston still can. On Thursday, the Fever announced that Clark remains out with a groin injury and has no timetable for a return. In a social media post, the team emphasized prioritizing "her long-term health and well-being," suggesting the organization won't cut corners in getting Clark back on the court. Indiana won't be title contenders without its star guard, but Boston's continued growth into one of the league's best players should keep it from falling out of the playoff picture. This season, Boston, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 WNBA Draft, ranks second in the league in win shares (4.5), trailing only MVP favorite Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier (5.8). Boston is averaging 15.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and one block per game. She has the fourth-highest player efficiency rating (PER), only trailing Collier, Las Vegas Aces center A'ja Wilson and Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas. Per Across The Timeline, she's one of seven players in league history with 1,500 points before turning 24 and is only improving. On June 24, she scored a career-high 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting in a win over the Seattle Storm. In that game, Clark struggled, going 3-of-13 from the court, including 0-of-6 on three-point attempts, and turning the ball over eight times. It was Boston and veteran guard Kelsey Mitchell, who had 26 points, who led the Fever when their star wasn't at her best. The Fever need Clark for them to reach their full potential, but until then, Boston must lead the way. She's arguably been Indiana's best player all season, something she'll have to continue being until Clark returns.
Cowboys quarterback seemingly takes a shot at his former team
Joe Milton III is experiencing training camp with his second NFL team in as many seasons, and the young quarterback says he has already noticed some significant differences. Milton was traded from the New England Patriots to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason in a somewhat surprising move. At practice on Thursday, the former Tennessee quarterback told reporters he has been surprised by how much mentoring he has received from Dak Prescott. Milton then seemed to take a swipe at his former team. "Dak is a great leader. … All respect to him. He literally goes out of his way to help me," Milton said. "I’ve been in another building. I know how that goes. It’s just very different over here.” Milton played behind fellow rookie Drake Maye in New England last season. He could not have expected the No. 3 overall pick to mentor him, so it is possible he was taking a shot at Jacoby Brissett, who was also on the Patriots' roster last year. Either way, it seems clear that Milton is having a better time in Dallas than he did last year. Milton gave a funnier reason for being happy about his trade to the Cowboys earlier this offseason.
