Tennessee Vols backup quarterback Gaston Moore played one snap against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
And it's a snap he'd probably like to forget.
In the first half, with the Vols trailing 7-0, Moore was inserted into the game when starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava was forced to make a visit to the injury tent after taking a hard hit.
Moore came into the game facing a third-and-nine. Most fans were likely expecting Moore to hand the ball off so the Vols could punt and play the field position game. Instead, a pass play was called and Moore, perhaps thinking it could be his one shining moment in a Tennessee uniform, went full Leeroy Jenkins!!!! and unleashed a pass into double coverage that was easily picked off by Alabama.

Not exactly a great decision there from Moore (though it should be pointed out that he threw that ball, across his body, 40 yards down the field....the majority of people reading this couldn't come close to making that throw).
That one throw, however, certainly doesn't define Moore as a quarterback. He's well-versed in Josh Heupel's scheme and he's a talented player. We've seen that talent in mop-up duty and during Tennessee's spring game.

Former Vols tight end Jacob Warren, who was teammates with Moore at Tennessee from 2021 to 2023, joined Off the Hook Sports this week and he made some comments about Moore that fans should probably hear.
"Not to make any excuses for him (Moore), he came in, obviously what happened, happened," said Warren. "I think he could've probably been put in a friendlier situation than to be thrown in there [on his first play] and he just goes in there and he's asked to throw this ball down the sideline. You know, was it short? Probably. Is it a bad throw? Maybe, I don't really know...was it a coverage thing, was it an execution thing? I don't know.
"But I, again, still support him. No one was more upset whenever it happened just because I know that that's not him. That's not what he wants. He's a good player. And I know he's going to get a lot of crap for it and that's what makes me upset. So, again, backup quarterbacks are some of the most important people in football. Unfortunately, not a lot of teams have a good one. I promise you we have a good one."
Moore didn't make a great throw. There's not much debate there. But it was a tough spot for him. He came into the game and that play gets called (maybe the Vols were trying to catch Alabama off guard with Nico out of the game for a moment), and Moore, who was cold coming off the bench, didn't execute the play.
That doesn't mean he's a bad backup quarterback or that the Vols have a backup quarterback problem. That one play just didn't go their way. It happens. But it's not a play that should stain Moore's reputation moving forward.
